Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOORFor one impossible second, I thought I was dreaming.

The woman stood beneath the porch light.

Dark coat.

Loose hair.

One hand pressed against the railing.

My heart stopped.

Because it was Claire.

My wife.

The woman I had buried.

The woman whose death certificate I had signed.

The woman whose ashes sat in a black box upstairs.

Juniper ran toward the door.

“Mommy!”

I caught her before she could open it.

“No.”

She struggled.

“But Mommy!”

Willa grabbed the curtains.

“Don't open that door.”

The woman outside lifted her face.

She stared directly into the window.

Then she raised one finger to her lips.

Silence.

My legs almost gave out.

I unlocked the door.

Willa grabbed my arm.

“Ethan, think.”

“I buried my wife.”

“And now she's standing outside.”

The woman knocked.

Three times.

Then whispered through the door.

“Ethan.”

I opened it.

Claire stepped inside.

She looked thinner.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

I couldn't speak.

She touched my face.

“You got the note.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I ran.”

“From whom?”

She looked over my shoulder.

At Juniper.

At Willa.

Then at the security camera mounted above the door.

“From your father.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why fake your death?”

“Because he was going to kill me.”

The words hit like a punch.

She continued.

“I discovered what he was doing with the company.”

“What?”

“Insurance fraud. Property transfers. False medical claims.”

I stared.

“And Juniper?”

Claire's expression changed.

“He needed control of her trust.”

“What trust?”

“The one you didn't know existed.”

I felt dizzy.

“What are you talking about?”

Claire whispered.

“Your grandfather left everything to Juniper.”

I shook my head.

“My grandfather died before she was born.”

“Exactly.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Your father has been trying to reach the trust since the day Juniper was born.”

Willa stepped forward.

“And the inhaler?”

Claire's face tightened.

“That came later.”

“What is in it?”

“Nothing.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“The original inhaler doesn't contain what you think it does.”

She looked at the sealed one on the table.

“That one is a replica.”

“Then why was Tabitha stealing Juniper's?”

Claire hesitated.

“Because she was looking for something.”

“What?”

Claire looked at Juniper.

Then she whispered:

“A tracking chip.”

Silence.

My daughter.

Her medical bag.

The inhaler.

The cameras.

Everything connected.

Claire moved toward the kitchen.

“Where is the second inhaler?”

I pointed.

She picked it up.

Then froze.

“This isn't ours.”

“Why?”

She turned it over.

There was a tiny scratch beneath the label.

“A serial number.”

She stared at it.

“They found it.”

“Who?”

Claire looked at the window.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Two men got out.

Claire grabbed my hand.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

May you like

“What?”

“They know I'm alive.”
