Chapter 14 - The Truth in the DriveWe reached the surface before dawn.

My mother survived.

Barely.

My father was arrested.

Reed escaped.

The hospital was surrounded by federal agents.

The Bellhaven facility beneath it was sealed.

And my daughter was transferred to a secure neonatal unit.

For the first time since the attack, I could breathe.

But I still had the flash drive.

Detective Morgan brought a computer.

“Let's see what your mother died trying to protect.”

I opened the drive.

Folders appeared.

Thousands of records.

Patient files.

DNA sequences.

Financial transfers.

Video footage.

Then one file caught my attention.

CLAIRE_CARTER_ORIGIN

I clicked.

The screen showed my grandmother.

She was younger.

Maybe forty.

She stared directly into the camera.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.”

I froze.

“This recording is for my granddaughter.”

I began crying.

My grandmother continued.

“If you're watching this, Crown has reached your child.”

She explained everything.

The marker wasn't designed.

It was natural.

But Bellhaven discovered it could interact with fetal development.

My grandmother initially believed it could eliminate inherited diseases.

Then the project changed.

They wanted to enhance human beings.

Children became experiments.

Families became laboratories.

And my father joined them.

But my grandmother eventually became horrified.

She tried to destroy the research.

My father stopped her.

She created the trust as a final safeguard.

Not for money.

For control.

The trust made her granddaughter the legal owner of Bellhaven's proprietary Crown research.

Her daughter would hold the assets temporarily.

But once a granddaughter carrying the marker was born, the research would transfer permanently.

The only way for Bellhaven to retain control was to prevent the child from being born.

My grandmother looked into the camera.

“There is one more thing.”

The video paused.

Then continued.

“Claire's husband was selected long before she knew.”

I stopped breathing.

Ethan.

The recording showed a file.

ETHAN CARTER

I looked at my husband.

“What?”

He stepped backward.

“I didn't know.”

The file showed Bellhaven records from years before we met.

His father had been part of the original project.

But Ethan wasn't just his son.

He had been genetically screened.

And Bellhaven had chosen him because his DNA could potentially produce a stronger Crown expression when paired with my bloodline.

My stomach twisted.

Our relationship had been engineered.

“Were you spying on me?”

Ethan looked devastated.

“No.”

“You knew about the research.”

“Not this.”

The recording continued.

My grandmother said:

“Do not blame Ethan for what his father did.”

I stared at him.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I loved you before I ever knew.”

I wanted to believe him.

Then the final file opened.

A birth record.

My daughter's name was already written.

LILY CARTER

Under it:

Projected Crown Expression: 97%.

And below that:

Potential neurological activation unknown.

I felt cold.

Then the screen flickered.

A new line appeared.

SUBJECT STATUS: ACTIVE.

The computer suddenly shut down.

Detective Morgan stood.

“What just happened?”

The room lights died.

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Not Ethan's.

Detective Morgan's.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“The neonatal unit has lost power.”

I ran.

We reached the unit.

Doctors were shouting.

Machines were restarting.

My baby was still alive.

But her incubator was open.

Empty.

I screamed.

“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?”

No one answered.

Then a monitor in the corner switched on.

A live video appeared.

My daughter was in someone's arms.

A hooded figure held her.

The camera slowly zoomed.

And the figure pulled back the hood.

It was Dr. Reed.

May you like

He smiled.

“You really should have listened to your grandmother.”
