Chapter 12: The Memory That Should Have Stayed Buried

The baby smiled.
Ethan stared at her.
For eighteen months, he had believed he was searching for a missing child.
Now he realized something far worse.
The child had been searching for him.
“Brother.”
The tiny voice echoed through the chamber.
Ethan's skin prickled.
His memories were returning faster.
A hospital.
A basement.
His biological father.
Three newborns.
Margaret.
Helena.
And a fourth figure standing behind them.
A woman Ethan didn't recognize.
She was holding a syringe.
His biological father was shouting:
“Don't let her touch him!”
Then the memory vanished.
Ethan gasped.
Clara grabbed his face.
“Ethan, look at me.”
He stared at her.
“I remember something.”
“What?”
“There was another woman.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Before Clara could ask anything else, every light in the chamber exploded.
Darkness.
Then emergency lights flashed.
The machine screamed.
SYSTEM CONTROL LOST.
Helena stumbled backward.
“No.”
Daniel raised his weapon.
“What happens now?”
Helena didn't answer.
Ethan's father did.
“The archive is opening.”
“What archive?”
“All the memories.”
Daniel looked toward the corridors.
Then they heard it.
Doors unlocking.
One after another.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Dozens of them.
Then hundreds.
People began shouting in the distance.
A man's voice screamed:
“Where am I?”
Another:
“Who brought me here?”
A woman sobbed:
“My baby!”
The estate was waking.
Ethan looked at Helena.
“You erased all their memories.”
“We had to.”
“Why?”
“Because the experiment couldn't survive witnesses.”
Ethan's anger erupted.
“You destroyed people's lives!”
Helena stared at him.
“You think your life was destroyed?”
She pointed toward Lily.
“Look at her.”
Lily was standing beside Clara.
Her eyes were closed.
Tears ran down her face.
“I remember,” she whispered.
Clara knelt beside her.
“What do you remember?”
“Everything.”
Her voice trembled.
“Grandma put me in the room.”
“What room?”
“The white room.”
“What happened?”
Lily looked at Ethan.
“She told me to forget Mommy.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Lily continued.
“She said Mommy would come back.”
“Why didn't she?”
“Because Grandma told me to wait.”
Clara pulled her close.
“I am so sorry.”
Lily whispered:
“I waited every day.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
He could barely stand.
Then Noah began crying.
The sound broke the moment.
Ethan rushed toward him.
He picked him up.
“My son.”
Noah grabbed his finger.
Ethan began crying.
“I remember you.”
Clara looked at him.
“What?”
“I remember holding him.”
“When?”
“The night he was born.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“And her.”
Lily smiled through tears.
“You held me too.”
He pulled both children close.
For the first time, his family was complete.
Then the machine exploded.
A violent wave of energy ripped through the chamber.
Ethan threw himself over the children.
Glass shattered.
Metal screamed.
The restraints broke.
Clara fell.
Daniel pulled her away from the machine.
“Get out!”
Ethan looked toward the chamber.
The original baby was still inside.
The glass pod was gone.
She was lying on the floor.
Alone.
Ethan ran toward her.
Helena shouted:
“Don't touch her!”
Ethan ignored her.
He picked up the baby.
She looked at him.
Her glowing eyes slowly returned to normal.
“Brother.”
Ethan held her tightly.
“I'm here.”
The baby touched his face.
And another memory hit.
Ethan was ten.
He was standing in the same chamber.
His biological father was kneeling before him.
In his arms was a newborn girl.
“Her name is Ava.”
Young Ethan looked at the baby.
“Why can't she stay with us?”
“Because Helena will kill her.”
“Why?”
“Because she is different.”
“How?”
His father looked at the child.
“She remembers.”
Young Ethan frowned.
“Remembers what?”
“Everything.”
The memory shifted.
Margaret entered.
She screamed:
“You brought her back!”
His biological father shouted:
“She's your granddaughter!”
Margaret replied:
“She is the original.”
Then came the gunshot.
Ethan's father fell.
The baby disappeared.
Ethan remembered screaming.
Then Margaret grabbed him.
“You saw nothing.”
A needle entered his neck.
Darkness.
Ethan opened his eyes.
“Ava.”
Clara looked at him.
“What?”
“The baby's name.”
He held her closer.
“Ava.”
Helena's face went white.
“You remembered.”
“Yes.”
Helena took a step backward.
“You weren't supposed to.”
Ethan stared at her.
“What makes Ava different?”
Helena's voice trembled.
“She can access the memories of anyone connected to her bloodline.”
“So she can remember everything.”
“Yes.”
“And you were afraid of that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Helena looked toward the machine.
“Because if Ava remembers everything…”
She swallowed.
“…she can expose the entire program.”
Ethan's eyes hardened.
“Good.”
Suddenly a gunshot rang out.
Helena staggered.
Blood spread across her shoulder.
Everyone turned.
Margaret stood on the balcony.
She was holding a gun.
Helena looked up.
“You…”
Margaret fired again.
Helena fell.
Clara screamed.
Ethan pulled the children behind him.
Margaret descended the stairs slowly.
“Enough.”
Ethan raised his weapon.
“You shot her.”
“She deserved it.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked at Ava.
“Because she created the thing she couldn't control.”
Ava began crying.
Margaret's face softened.
“Come to Grandma.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“No.”
Margaret smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“Ava isn't the dangerous one.”
Ethan froze.
Margaret pointed at Clara.
“The dangerous one is inside your wife.”
Clara's face drained of color.
Ethan turned.
“What did you put in her?”
Margaret laughed.
“Nothing.”
She pointed toward Clara's stomach.
“The baby.”
Clara instinctively covered her stomach.
Margaret continued:
“The unborn child isn't carrying the mutation.”
Ethan stared.
“Then what is she carrying?”
Margaret's smile became terrifying.
“The original memory.”
Silence.
Ava suddenly began screaming.
The machine reacted.
Blue light filled the chamber.
Noah cried.
Lily collapsed.
Clara screamed.
Ethan tried to hold them all.
“What is happening?”
His father shouted:
“The children are connecting!”
“What does that mean?”
“The machine is transferring memories.”
“Can we stop it?”
His father looked at the machine.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the unborn baby has already started the transfer.”
Clara cried:
“Make it stop!”
Ethan grabbed her hand.
“I will.”
Margaret watched.
“It's too late.”
A low heartbeat filled the chamber.
Not Clara's.
Not Noah's.
Not Lily's.
Something else.
A fourth heartbeat.
Coming from beneath the floor.
Ethan stared.
“What is that?”
His father looked horrified.
“There's another machine.”
“Where?”
“Below us.”
The floor cracked.
A black metal structure rose from beneath the chamber.
At its center was a transparent cylinder.
Inside it was a human figure.
An adult.
A man.
Ethan stared.
The face was familiar.
Too familiar.
His biological father.
But he wasn't dead.
His eyes were open.
And he was looking directly at Ethan.
Ethan whispered:
“Dad…”
The man lifted one hand against the glass.
Then his mouth moved.
Ethan couldn't hear him.
But Ava could.
The baby's eyes widened.
She looked at Ethan.
And whispered:
“He says…”
Ethan leaned closer.
“What?”
Ava's tiny hand pointed toward the cylinder.
“He says…”
She paused.
“…don't trust your mother.”
Margaret's face suddenly changed.
Because she knew exactly what Ava had just remembered.
And then the man inside the cylinder opened his mouth again.
This time, every speaker in the chamber carried his voice.
“Ethan…”
A pause.
May you like
“Margaret is not your mother.”
The entire room went silent.
