Chapter 15: The Choice I Refused to Make

And Daniel...

You have already made this choice once.

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

Ten minutes.

Two daughters.

One choice.

And somewhere beneath the hospital, someone was waiting for me to decide which child would live.

Lily was crying beside me.

“Daddy…”

I grabbed her hand.

“I’m here.”

“But she said she was Lily.”

“I know.”

“Then who am I?”

I looked into her eyes.

For eight years, I had called this little girl my daughter.

I had carried her when she was sick.

Held her through nightmares.

Taught her to ride a bicycle.

Stayed beside her hospital bed when she had pneumonia.

I had never cared about blood.

She was my child.

But somewhere beneath us was another little girl.

A girl who was also mine.

A girl who had spent eight years waiting for someone to find her.

I looked at Anna.

She was gone.

I looked at the corridor.

Empty.

Then I heard a child's voice through the speakers.

“Daddy…”

The real Lily.

I stepped toward the sound.

“Lily?”

“I'm here.”

“Where?”

“Room twenty.”

The speakers crackled.

“Daddy, please hurry.”

I looked at the wall.

A small number appeared on the security monitor.

20.

I remembered the photograph.

Twenty children.

Only two faces uncrossed.

Lily.

Emily.

I turned to the girl beside me.

“Emily?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Can you walk?”

“Yes.”

“Then stay with me.”

We moved through the corridor.

The emergency lights flickered.

Every few seconds, another camera turned toward us.

Someone was watching.

We reached a steel door marked:

ROOM 20

I entered the code from the photograph.

The door opened.

Inside was a control room.

Screens covered every wall.

Hundreds of files.

Every screen showed a different person.

Judges.

Doctors.

Bankers.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Then one screen changed.

Thomas appeared.

“You have five minutes.”

I looked at him.

“Where is Lily?”

“Behind the next door.”

“Open it.”

“You know the rules.”

“I don't play your games.”

“You already did.”

He pressed something.

A screen appeared.

A little boy stood beside a red door.

Me.

Nine years old.

Elias stood next to me.

Across from us were two boys.

Identical.

One was Elias.

The other was Michael.

A man's voice asked:

“Which one is your brother?”

My younger self pointed.

At Michael.

I watched myself make the choice.

Then Thomas spoke.

“You chose the wrong boy.”

I shook my head.

“I was a child.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why show me this?”

“Because you need to understand.”

The screen changed.

A woman appeared.

My mother.

She was holding a baby.

Then another.

Twins.

Lily and Emily.

Thomas continued:

“Your mother tried to escape with both children.”

The video showed her running through a hospital corridor.

Someone chased her.

She entered a room.

Then Anna appeared.

Anna took one baby.

My mother took the other.

The screen went black.

Thomas spoke again.

“She saved one.”

“And Anna saved the other.”

“Yes.”

“Then why were they separated?”

“Because your mother believed one child was safer with you.”

I stared at the screen.

“The girl I raised…”

“Emily.”

“And the girl beneath the hospital…”

“Lily.”

My chest tightened.

“Why did Anna hide the truth?”

“Because she knew the Black Compass would hunt both children.”

“And now?”

“Now they know.”

I looked at the timer.

04:12

“What do you want?”

Thomas smiled.

“The Carter Trust.”

“I don't care about it.”

“You should.”

“I'll sign everything over.”

“That's not enough.”

“What else?”

“You.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Your blood is the final authorization.”

I understood.

The trust wasn't just about money.

They needed my DNA.

My identity.

My signature.

My cooperation.

“And the girls?”

“They are leverage.”

I stepped toward the camera.

“If I give you what you want, you release them?”

Thomas smiled.

“No.”

I clenched my fists.

“Then we're done.”

The timer showed:

03:36

Thomas sighed.

“Then choose.”

A wall opened.

Two rooms appeared.

In the first, Lily was sitting on a chair.

In the second, Emily.

Both were crying.

Both had restraints around their wrists.

A red light blinked above each door.

Thomas said:

“One door opens.”

I stared.

“Which one?”

“That's your choice.”

Emily looked through the glass.

“Daddy!”

Lily screamed:

“Don't choose!”

I froze.

“Don't choose?”

Emily shook her head.

“He wants you to choose!”

Thomas's smile disappeared.

“What did you say?”

Emily looked directly at the camera.

“I remember.”

Thomas stood.

“What do you remember?”

“The first experiment.”

He froze.

Emily continued.

“You taught them that fathers always choose blood.”

I stared at her.

She looked at me.

“But he won't.”

Thomas shouted:

“Shut her up!”

The lights flickered.

The control room doors unlocked.

Someone had hacked the system.

I looked at the monitor.

A message appeared.

ACCESS OVERRIDE: ANNA CARTER

My heart jumped.

Anna.

She was alive.

The two doors opened simultaneously.

Both girls ran.

I sprinted forward.

I reached Lily first.

She threw herself into my arms.

“Daddy!”

“I've got you.”

Emily reached us seconds later.

She looked terrified.

I grabbed her hand too.

“No more choices.”

Thomas screamed through the speakers.

“You can't take both!”

I looked at the camera.

“Watch me.”

Then the entire building shook.

An explosion rocked the lower level.

Sprinklers activated.

Sirens screamed.

Doors opened throughout the facility.

And suddenly people began running out.

Children.

Teenagers.

Adults.

Dozens of them.

Subjects.

Survivors.

Witnesses.

The Black Compass experiment was collapsing.

I saw Anna at the end of the corridor.

She was carrying a stack of files.

She looked at me.

“Daniel!”

I ran toward her.

“You're okay.”

“Yes.”

“Who opened the doors?”

She smiled.

“Your mother.”

I looked around.

“Where is she?”

Anna's expression changed.

“She went after Thomas.”

We reached the main control room.

The door was open.

Thomas was gone.

But Detective Collins stood beside the central computer.

Blood covered her sleeve.

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For making you live a lie.”

I stepped toward her.

“You protected me.”

“I failed you.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You brought me back.”

She looked at Lily and Emily.

“Both?”

I nodded.

“Both.”

She smiled through tears.

“Then maybe I finally did something right.”

Sirens filled the building.

Real police officers flooded the corridors.

Federal agents followed.

Evidence teams carried boxes of documents out of the rooms.

Every file.

Every recording.

Every name.

Every secret.

The Black Compass was exposed.

But Thomas was still missing.

Three days later, the authorities seized hundreds of accounts connected to the Carter Trust.

The custody petition against me was dismissed.

Evelyn's arrest led investigators to dozens of financial records.

Michael was captured trying to leave the country.

Elias survived his injuries.

And for the first time in twenty-one years, my family sat around one table.

Not a perfect family.

Not an ordinary family.

But a real one.

Lily sat beside me.

Emily sat across from her.

They were still learning how to call each other sisters.

Anna sat at the end of the table.

She looked at me.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

I looked at her.

“I don't know if I can.”

She nodded.

“But I'm glad you're alive.”

She smiled.

“That’s enough.”

Then Lily reached across the table and took Emily's hand.

“You can have my room.”

Emily laughed.

“No.”

“You can.”

“I don't want your room.”

“Why?”

“Because I want my own.”

Lily smiled.

“Okay.”

For the first time in years, there was laughter in our house.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

One message.

You think it's over.

Another appeared.

Thomas Carter was never the head of the Black Compass.

My blood went cold.

A final message arrived.

Ask your mother who signed the original agreement.

I slowly looked toward Collins.

She saw my expression.

“What is it?”

I turned the phone toward her.

She read the messages.

Her face went pale.

“Daniel…”

“Who signed it?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

I frowned.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could he sign it?”

Collins stared at the screen.

“He didn't.”

“Who did?”

She looked toward Anna.

Anna had gone completely white.

Then she whispered:

“Your grandfather had a daughter nobody knew about.”

I felt the room become silent.

“A daughter?”

Anna nodded.

“She was the first person to create the Black Compass.”

“Who?”

Anna looked at Emily.

Then Lily.

Then finally at me.

“Your aunt.”

I stared at her.

“What was her name?”

Anna swallowed.

“Victoria Carter.”

The same name appeared on the phone.

One final message.

Hello, nephew.

Then another.

We need to talk.

I looked at my daughters.

The nightmare wasn't over.

May you like

It had only changed its face.

And somewhere far away, someone who had been watching our family for twenty years had just decided to come home.
