Chapter 14: The Husband Who Wasn't Andrew

The gun was pointed directly at my chest.

I couldn't breathe.

Andrew stood three feet away, rainwater still dripping from his jacket.

His face was blank.

Too blank.

“Andrew…”

His finger rested against the trigger.

“I'm sorry.”

Emily immediately stepped in front of me.

“Put the gun down.”

Andrew didn't move.

Lorraine whispered:

“No.”

I stared at my husband.

The man I had married.

The man who had slept beside me for seven years.

The man whose lies had already shattered everything I believed about my life.

And now he was holding a gun.

At me.

“You're the man behind everything?”

Andrew's eyes flickered.

“I didn't want you to find out this way.”

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The word barely escaped his lips.

My chest tightened.

“You knew about Clara.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Victor.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Emily.”

“Yes.”

“And you married me because of all of it.”

Andrew swallowed.

“Yes.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“Was any of it real?”

He didn't answer.

That silence hurt more than the gun.

I looked at the recorder.

My mother's voice had called him the man behind everything.

But something wasn't right.

Andrew had looked genuinely terrified when Victor appeared.

He had fought Richard.

He had protected me.

He had taken a bullet meant for my father.

Unless…

It had all been an act.

I looked at his hand.

The gun was shaking.

Barely.

“Andrew.”

He looked at me.

“Do you remember our first date?”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“You took me to that little restaurant beside the lake.”

“Yes.”

“You spilled coffee on your shirt.”

A faint smile appeared.

“You laughed for ten minutes.”

“You said you hated coffee.”

“I still do.”

“You ordered another cup.”

“Because you liked it.”

My voice cracked.

“You remember.”

“Of course.”

“Then tell me you never loved me.”

Andrew closed his eyes.

“I can't.”

My heart broke.

“Why?”

“Because I did.”

The gun lowered slightly.

Emily stepped forward.

“Then why are you pointing it at her?”

Andrew looked at her.

“Because I have no choice.”

“Everyone says that.”

“I mean it.”

“Who is forcing you?”

Andrew's jaw tightened.

He looked at me.

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“My mother is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then how?”

He slowly raised the recorder.

“There is another recording.”

“What?”

“Your mother didn't finish speaking.”

He pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then Clara's voice returned.

“If Andrew is holding this gun, it means Victor has reached the final stage.”

I stared at Andrew.

Clara continued:

“Do not trust the man holding the gun.”

Andrew's eyes closed.

My heart stopped.

“Because the man holding the gun isn't Andrew.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“His name is Daniel.”

Emily's face went white.

“No.”

Andrew looked at me.

Then he slowly reached behind his ear.

He peeled away a thin strip of artificial skin.

My blood ran cold.

The face I knew was beginning to change.

The jawline.

The cheekbones.

The nose.

The voice.

Everything.

He removed the disguise.

And the man standing before me was not my husband.

It was Daniel Vale.

Richard's son.

The man who had betrayed us at the lake cottage.

I stumbled backward.

“No…”

Daniel lowered the gun.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“You impersonated my husband.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Three months.”

My stomach turned.

“Where is Andrew?”

Daniel looked down.

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Emily stepped toward him.

“You killed the real Andrew?”

“No.”

“Then where is he?”

“Victor has him.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because Andrew is the real key.”

“To the trust.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Victor needs his blood.”

I stared at him.

“Then why impersonate him?”

“Because Victor needed you to trust Andrew.”

“You mean he needed me to trust you.”

“Yes.”

“And the photographs?”

“Real.”

“The investigator?”

“Real.”

“The affair?”

“Fake.”

“Everything?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not everything.”

“What was real?”

He looked at me.

“Your husband loved you.”

I laughed through my tears.

“You don't get to say that.”

“I know.”

“Then where is he?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Underground.”

“Where?”

“Beneath the old Carter estate.”

My heart stopped.

“The house?”

“Yes.”

“The house where I grew up?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where Victor built the original vault.”

I looked toward the fireplace.

The hidden recording.

The old photograph.

The secrets.

Everything was beneath my childhood home.

Daniel continued.

“Victor has been looking for something your father hid there.”

“What?”

“The original trust.”

I frowned.

“You said Andrew's blood opens it.”

“It does.”

“Then why does he need me?”

“Because the trust requires two signatures.”

“Whose?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Yours and Andrew's.”

My blood ran cold.

“But I'm not the heir.”

“No.”

“Then why mine?”

“Because your mother changed the trust.”

I stared at the recorder.

Clara's voice returned.

“The trust cannot be opened by blood alone.”

A pause.

“It requires choice.”

I frowned.

“Choice?”

“Yes.”

“The heir must choose who receives the inheritance.”

Daniel nodded.

“Victor cannot force it.”

“Then why has he spent thirty years chasing us?”

“Because he needs you to willingly choose Andrew.”

“And if I refuse?”

“He loses everything.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And if I choose Andrew?”

“Victor gains control.”

I understood.

This entire nightmare had been engineered around one thing.

My choice.

My marriage.

My trust.

My signature.

My love.

Everything was a trap designed to make me voluntarily hand over the keys.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is Andrew?”

“I told you.”

“Underground.”

“Where exactly?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the fireplace.

“Behind that wall.”

I turned.

“The vault is beneath us.”

“Yes.”

I walked toward the fireplace.

“Help me open it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor is watching.”

I looked around.

The cameras.

The hidden microphones.

The entire house had become a cage.

Then the lights went out.

A voice came through the speakers.

Victor.

“You finally understand.”

I froze.

“Show yourself.”

His voice laughed.

“You still think this is about money.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

“I won't choose anything.”

“You will.”

“No.”

“You always do.”

I looked at the fireplace.

“What happened to Andrew?”

Silence.

Then Victor said:

“Ask Daniel.”

Daniel's face went pale.

I turned toward him.

“What?”

Victor continued:

“Daniel knows exactly where your husband is.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Don't listen to him.”

“Where is Andrew?”

“I don't know.”

Victor laughed.

“Tell her.”

Daniel's grip tightened around the gun.

“I said I don't know.”

“Then perhaps she should see what you did.”

A screen hidden inside the fireplace suddenly lit up.

Video footage appeared.

A dark basement.

Andrew was tied to a chair.

Blood covered his face.

I covered my mouth.

“Andrew!”

He lifted his head.

His eyes opened.

He was alive.

Barely.

Then another figure entered the frame.

Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel walked toward Andrew.

The video showed him placing something on the table.

A gun.

Andrew looked up at him.

“You're going to kill me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because they need to believe you're dead.”

Andrew laughed weakly.

“Who?”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Your wife.”

The footage stopped.

I turned toward Daniel.

“You did that.”

“Yes.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“Yes.”

“You tortured him.”

“No.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

I raised my hand.

“Then why should I believe anything you say?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“You shouldn't.”

The floor beneath us suddenly shook.

A deep mechanical sound came from beneath the house.

The fireplace moved.

A hidden staircase appeared.

Cold air rose from below.

Victor's voice came through the speakers one last time.

“Come downstairs.”

I stared into the darkness.

Daniel stepped beside me.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Don't go.”

I looked at her.

“If Andrew is down there…”

“He could be bait.”

“I know.”

“And Victor could be waiting.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

I looked at the dark staircase.

“Because if I don't go, he dies.”

We descended.

The stairs seemed endless.

At the bottom was a massive steel door.

There was no lock.

Instead, there were two handprints.

One labeled:

HEIR

The other:

CHOOSER

Daniel looked at me.

“You're the chooser.”

“And Andrew?”

“The heir.”

I placed my hand on the first panel.

Nothing happened.

Then Daniel said:

“Your blood.”

I pressed my palm harder.

A sharp needle pierced my skin.

I gasped.

Blood appeared on the scanner.

The door clicked.

But it didn't open.

A second voice came from behind us.

Andrew.

Weak.

“Don't.”

I turned.

He was standing at the end of the corridor.

Alive.

Walking toward us.

I stared at him.

“Andrew?”

He stopped.

Daniel raised his gun.

Andrew raised both hands.

“It's me.”

I ran toward him.

Then stopped.

Something felt wrong.

His face.

His voice.

His eyes.

I looked at Daniel.

Daniel whispered:

“That's not Andrew.”

My blood froze.

The man smiled.

Then slowly removed a small device from his pocket.

His face changed.

Not completely.

Just enough.

A disguise.

Another face appeared beneath it.

Older.

Sharper.

Familiar.

Victor.

I stumbled backward.

Victor smiled.

“You finally opened the door.”

The steel vault behind me unlocked.

Inside was a mountain of documents, gold, hard drives, and photographs.

But Victor wasn't looking at any of it.

He was staring at me.

“Now,” he whispered, “we can finally meet properly.”

He pointed toward the far end of the vault.

A glass chamber stood there.

Inside was a man tied to a chair.

Andrew.

Alive.

And beside him stood a woman.

Clara.

Impossible.

My mother.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But alive.

She looked directly at me through the glass.

And whispered:

“Don't trust your father.”

I couldn't breathe.

Behind me, Daniel suddenly raised his gun.

Victor smiled.

And Clara lifted her hand.

May you like

In it was a detonator.

Then she pressed the button.
