Chapter 7 - LilyWe found Lily the next morning.

Not because Margaret told us where she was.

Because Lily wanted to be found.

She was living under another name in a small town three hours away.

She was forty years old.

And when she opened the door, Evan couldn't move.

They stared at each other.

Brother and sister.

Twenty years stolen.

Then Lily whispered:

“You got old.”

Evan started crying.

So did I.

Lily looked at Maisie.

Her face changed.

“She's beautiful.”

“She looks like you,” Rebecca whispered.

Lily smiled sadly.

“She has my mother's eyes.”

Margaret wasn't there.

She had been taken in for questioning.

Lily told us what happened.

She hadn't died.

Margaret had locked her away after discovering that Rebecca intended to expose her financial crimes.

Lily escaped at thirteen.

She lived under a different name.

She never contacted Evan because Margaret threatened to destroy anyone who helped her.

But Lily had watched.

She had watched Evan marry me.

She had watched Maisie being born.

And she had seen Margaret become obsessed with my daughter.

“Why?” I asked.

Lily looked at me.

“Because Margaret believed Maisie belonged to her.”

“What does that mean?”

Lily hesitated.

Then she told me.

Margaret had created an inheritance scheme.

She wanted Maisie to be named the sole beneficiary of a trust controlled by Margaret.

But there was a condition.

Maisie's biological lineage had to remain hidden.

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Lily's expression hardened.

“Because the trust was stolen.”

“From who?”

“From me.”

The room went silent.

Lily explained that Margaret had stolen Rebecca's inheritance after Lily disappeared.

The money had grown for twenty years.

Millions.

Margaret had hidden it through shell companies.

And Maisie's existence threatened everything.

Because if Lily was alive, the original inheritance could be reclaimed.

And if Maisie was Lily's daughter, she had a legal claim.

Suddenly the slap wasn't about soup.

It wasn't about the rug.

It wasn't even about control.

Margaret had been watching my daughter because Maisie was connected to a fortune.

I felt sick.

Then Lily handed me a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Maisie as a newborn.

Taken from outside the hospital window.

On the back:

She belongs to us.

I looked at Lily.

“Who wrote this?”

She didn't answer.

Evan did.

“My mother.”

Then my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

“Claire, you need to come back to Margaret's house.”

“Why?”

“We found something.”

“What?”

“A second basement.”

I froze.

“What?”

His voice lowered.

“And Claire…”

“Yes?”

“We found children's shoes.”

A pause.

“There are six pairs.”
