Chapter 11 - The Confession Behind the Locked DoorJavier was missing for nearly four hours.

The police eventually found him inside the storage facility, unharmed but shaken. Someone had forced open the unit before his arrival, scattering files across the floor.
At the back of the room, hidden behind a cabinet, investigators discovered a small recording device.
It contained a conversation between Carmen and Javier's father.
The date was three weeks before his death.
Javier returned to the hospital carrying a copy of the transcript.
He looked older than he had the previous day.
“Dad knew about the missing money,” he said.
I sat up against my pillows.
“What did the recording say?”
Javier swallowed.
“He confronted Mom. He told her he had discovered transfers from the company accounts and that he intended to report them.”
“What did she say?”
“She denied everything. Then she threatened to expose him.”
“Expose him for what?”
Javier placed the transcript on my blanket.
His father had apparently been aware of irregularities in the construction business for several years. He had signed certain documents without fully understanding their implications, trusting Carmen and the accountant to handle the paperwork.
When the discrepancies emerged, Carmen threatened to make it appear that he had knowingly participated in the scheme.
The conversation ended with a chilling exchange.
You can't keep controlling this family forever, Javier's father said.
Carmen replied, I don't need forever. I only need to make certain nobody can take it away from me.
Then the recording stopped.
I stared at the page.
“Did she cause his death?”
“We don't know,” Javier said. “The police have reopened the inquiry. Dad died following a cardiac emergency, and the medical findings at the time didn't establish foul play.”
“But she threatened him.”
“Yes.”
Javier lowered his head.
“For years, I thought Miguel had abandoned us because he was greedy. I thought Mom was holding the company together. Dad died, and I never asked enough questions.”
I touched his hand.
“You didn't know.”
“I should have known.”
“Then help the police find the truth.”
He nodded.
A knock interrupted us.
Inspector Valdés entered carrying a tablet.
“We have located Elena Ruiz.”
“Where?” Javier asked.
“She contacted a lawyer this morning and agreed to give a statement. She's frightened, but she's cooperating.”
“Does she have the recording?”
“She has another copy.”
The inspector paused.
“There's a problem, however. Before she came forward, Carmen filed a complaint accusing Laura of threatening and harassing her.”
I stared at her.
“She attacked me!”
“I know. We have the footage and the hospital records. Her complaint doesn't change the evidence. But she appears to be trying to create confusion before the financial investigation advances.”
“What happens now?” Javier asked.
“We'll interview Ruiz. We'll also seek authorization to examine the company's records and any devices connected to the transactions.”
After the inspector left, Javier sat beside me.
“I should have protected you from her.”
I looked at him.
“You should have believed me before the camera showed you what happened.”
He flinched.
I hadn't meant the words to be cruel. They were simply true.
“I spent years convincing myself that if I stayed quiet, things would get better,” I continued. “I told myself she was difficult because she loved you. I told myself every insult was worth enduring for our family.”
Javier's eyes filled.
“I let you suffer.”
“Yes.”
He lowered his head.
I took a breath.
“I don't know what happens to our marriage after this. I love you, Javier, but I can't spend the rest of my life waiting for your mother to decide whether I'm allowed to be happy.”
He nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
For the first time, he didn't defend Carmen.
He didn't ask me to forgive her.
He didn't tell me to be patient.
He simply listened.
Then his phone rang.
A police officer had located Elena, who was preparing to hand over her evidence.
But she had made one condition.
She would only testify if Javier agreed to meet her privately first.

And according to the message she sent, she had one final piece of information that could change everything.
Carmen had not acted alone.
