Chapter 15 - The BraceletThe bracelet looked worthless.

That was the point.
Sage removed it carefully.
The clasp separated.
Inside was a tiny metal capsule.
My mother gasped.
“I didn't know.”
Noah laughed quietly.
“Of course you didn't.”
Inside the capsule was a micro-SD card.
Tiny.
Almost weightless.
We inserted it into my laptop.
There was one file.
ROBERT_FINAL.
My father appeared.
This was not a recording from ten months ago.
It was from three days before his death.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Sage,” he said.
My daughter covered her mouth.
“If you are seeing this, then your eighteenth birthday has passed.”
He smiled.
“I wish I could have given this to you myself.”
He paused.
“I need you to know one thing.”
His voice softened.
“You were never the leftover.”
Sage began to cry.
“You were the reason I built all of this.”
The video shifted to documents.
The trust.
The farm.
The insurance policy.
The private accounts.
Then my father returned to the screen.
“Your grandmother will tell you she acted out of love.”
He paused.
“Believe that she loved you.”
My mother stared.
“But do not confuse love with entitlement.”
My father's face became serious.
“She believed the family belonged to whoever controlled the money.”
He looked down.
“I believed the family belonged to whoever protected the truth.”
Then he revealed the final secret.
“The original Ellis fortune was never mine.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The money was stolen from a business partner named Elias Hart.”
My stomach dropped.
Pike's business.
“Elias Hart had a daughter.”
My father named her.
“Evelyn Cross.”
Everyone turned to Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
“My father was the original beneficiary.”
She nodded.
“Robert discovered it.”
My father continued.
“Pike knows. Your grandmother knows. Daniel knows.”
Then:
“But there is something they don't know.”
He held up a document.
“The trust contains a restitution clause.”
“What does that mean?” Sage asked.
Evelyn answered.
“If the original ownership is proven, the entire fortune can be reclaimed.”
“And who gets it?”
“No one.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Not directly.”
My father continued.
“It returns to the Hart estate.”
“And the family?”
“Must repay what was taken.”
I looked at my mother.
She was shaking.
“How much?”
Evelyn answered.
“Millions.”
My father leaned toward the camera.
“There is only one way to stop the trust from collapsing.”
He looked directly at Sage.
“You must choose.”
The screen froze.
Then the audio continued.
“Choose between keeping the fortune…”
A pause.
“…or exposing the truth.”
The file ended.
Nobody spoke.
Sage looked at me.
“What would Grandpa want me to do?”
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
Pike walked in.
He carried a handgun.
My mother screamed.
Noah stepped in front of Sage.
May you like
Pike smiled.
“Now we can finally stop pretending.”
