Chapter 8 - The Debt No One Could PayThe family house had become collateral in a debt that was far more dangerous than a bank loan.

Claire agreed to meet us the next day.
Not at her home.
Not at an office.
In a public library thirty miles away.
She arrived wearing a gray coat and sunglasses.
She looked around before sitting.
“Are you alone?”
I nodded.
Sophie sat beside me.
Claire removed the sunglasses.
She looked tired.
Not physically.
The kind of tired that settles into someone's eyes after years of being careful.
“You need to understand something,” she said.
“I already know about the refinance.”
“That was the easy part.”
“What is the hard part?”
She looked at Sophie.
“Who is he?”
“Attorney.”
Claire nodded.
“Then you can hear this.”
She placed a folder on the table.
Derek had borrowed money from a private investment group years earlier.
The money was supposed to fund his business.
But the business was losing money.
Instead of admitting it, he borrowed again.
Then again.
He used one loan to cover another.
The classic financial spiral.
But eventually, he ran out of places to borrow.
That's when my parents got involved.
They mortgaged the house.
The money went to Derek.
But according to Claire, it still wasn't enough.
“So where did the rest come from?” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
“Your parents.”
“Through the trust?”
“Yes.”
“Why would Elaine be involved?”
“Because Elaine controlled the trust structure.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
Claire hesitated.
“Because the original idea was to move the house into a trust before the debt became visible.”
“Visible to whom?”
“Creditors.”
I felt sick.
“So they were hiding the house.”
“Trying to.”
“From Derek's creditors?”
“From everyone.”
Claire leaned forward.
“Naomi, your parents were trying to protect their home while using it to finance your brother.”
She opened another document.
There was a handwritten note.
Naomi must release claim before transfer.
I stared at it.
“My name.”
“Yes.”
“Why would I have a claim?”
“Because your parents named you as the beneficiary.”
I remembered the deed.
“But I didn't own it yet.”
“No.”
“But they needed my signature.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“To transfer the property cleanly.”
“Where?”
Claire looked at me.
“To Derek.”
I sat back.
“So the whole plan was to push me out, convince me to sign, then transfer the house.”
Claire nodded.
“Exactly.”
“Why would they need to trick me?”
“Because if you understood the debt attached to the house, you might refuse.”
I stared at the folder.
“And the word parasite?”
Claire gave a bitter smile.
“Your mother wanted you emotionally destabilized.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“She wanted me angry.”
“She wanted you hurt enough to leave quickly.”
“And if I came back?”
“They planned to have you sign documents.”
I looked at Sophie.
She nodded slowly.
“What happens if I don't sign?”
Claire answered:
“Then the plan becomes much harder.”
Silence.
I realized something.
“That's why they packed my things before telling me.”
Claire nodded.
“They needed control of the house.”
I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“And Derek?”
Claire looked away.
“He knows.”
“How much?”
“Almost everything.”
I stared at the table.
My brother had looked into my eyes and told me I was making drama.
He had known they were replacing me.
Then Claire said:
“You need to hear the worst part.”
I waited.
“The money borrowed against the house is already gone.”
I frowned.
“Derek used it?”
“Not exactly.”
“Then where?”
She slid another document toward me.
An offshore investment account.
The account belonged to a company I didn't recognize.
But the beneficial owner was listed.
Derek.
The money had been transferred out months earlier.
Then returned in smaller amounts.
Claire pointed to the dates.
“He's been laundering the appearance of repayment.”
My stomach twisted.
“So the payments made on the debt aren't really payments?”
“Some are. Some aren't.”
“Then why keep it going?”
“Because the lender thinks he's still solvent.”
I looked at Claire.
“And what happens when they find out?”
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
“They will take the house.”
Everything became clear.
My parents were running out of time.
Derek was running out of money.
The house was the final asset.
And I had unknowingly stood between them and the clean transfer they needed.
Then Claire reached into her bag and pulled out a flash drive.
“This is why I contacted you.”
“What is it?”
“Copies of Derek's financial records.”
I looked at the drive.
“Why give this to me?”
“Because I tried to stop them once.”
She swallowed.
“They destroyed my life for it.”
Sophie took the drive.
Claire stood.
“You need to move fast.”
“Why?”
“Because the transfer hearing is next week.”
I froze.
“What hearing?”
Claire looked at me.
“The one your parents haven't told you about.”
Then she walked away.
Sophie turned toward me.
“Naomi.”
“What?”
“We need to find out what happens next week.”
I looked at the flash drive.

Whatever was on it could save me.
Or destroy my family forever.
