Chapter 7 - The Sterling Family TrustSubtitle: My Son Was Worth $180 MillionThe courthouse emptied.

But nobody left.
The judge ordered an immediate evidentiary hearing.
That was when the truth finally surfaced.
The Sterling family trust wasn't worth millions.
It was worth one hundred eighty million dollars.
Sterling Holdings controlled commercial real estate, private clinics, logistics companies, hotels, and investment funds across three states.
And according to the trust, ownership would eventually pass to the "male descendant of the Sterling bloodline."
Leo.
My baby.
My tiny sleeping son.
He had inherited more money before opening his eyes than most people earned in ten lifetimes.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Karen didn't simply want a child.
She wanted a key.
Richard wasn't protecting his family.
He was protecting control.
And Daniel?
He had chosen his family over his wife and children.
I found him outside the courthouse.
He looked broken.
"Elena."
I kept walking.
"Please."
I stopped.
"What?"
"I didn't know about the money."
"You're lying."
"I knew there was a trust."
"You knew enough to promise Karen my son."
He lowered his eyes.
"I thought it was the only way."
"The only way to what?"
"Save my father's company."
I turned toward him.
"Then save it without my child."
He stepped closer.
"I love you."
I laughed.
"No."
"I do."
"Love doesn't come with adoption papers."
His face crumpled.
"I was scared."
"So was I."
"I thought you would understand eventually."
"I understood the first time your mother touched my son."
He reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
Then Victoria came outside.
"Elena."
She was holding a red folder.
"The trust has another clause."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She opened it.
"The trust becomes irrevocable if the first male descendant is born."
I stared.
"So?"
"The controlling interest transfers automatically."
"To Leo?"
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"Then Richard doesn't control the company anymore."
Victoria shook her head.
"Not exactly."
She pointed to the next paragraph.
"The father becomes trustee until the child reaches adulthood."
I froze.
"The father?"
"Daniel."
We both turned toward him.
Daniel stared at the document.
"I didn't know."
Victoria smiled.
"That's because someone amended the trust last year."
"Who?"
She pointed to the signature.
Richard Sterling.
I looked at Daniel.
He suddenly understood.
His father's plan wasn't simply to take Leo.
He wanted Daniel to control the trust.
But Daniel was easy to manipulate.
Richard could control his son.
Which meant he could control Leo's fortune.
And that wasn't the worst part.
Victoria flipped the page.
"There's something else."
She handed it to me.
My eyes scanned the paragraph.
A trustee who becomes subject to criminal investigation or whose marriage dissolves under circumstances involving fraud may lose all control over the trust.
I looked up.
"You're telling me..."
"Daniel is in danger."
His face went white.
"What are you saying?"
"Your father has already made you the trustee."
I stared at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Then my phone rang.
It was the hospital.
The maternity ward supervisor sounded panicked.
"Judge Vance, you need to come back immediately."
"Why?"
"There was an attempt to remove your daughter from the nursery."
I couldn't breathe.
"Who?"
May you like
The supervisor whispered:
"Karen Sterling."
