Chapter 12 - The Night the Door OpenedThe final attempt to silence Skylar

The safe location went into lockdown.

Police surrounded the building.

Laura was moved to another floor.

Skylar stayed with Mara and Alvarez.

For three hours, nothing happened.

Then every light went out.

Complete darkness.

The emergency generator failed.

Alvarez immediately drew his weapon.

“Stay down.”

A door slammed somewhere below.

Then another.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was coming upstairs.

Skylar's heart pounded.

Mara grabbed her hand.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then the fire alarm screamed.

Emergency lights flashed.

A figure appeared at the end of the hall.

Alvarez shouted:

“POLICE! STOP!”

The figure ran.

Officers chased him.

Skylar heard a crash.

Then shouting.

Then silence.

Minutes later, Alvarez returned.

He was carrying a phone.

“We caught someone.”

“Who?”

“Not Victor.”

Skylar's stomach dropped.

“Then who?”

Alvarez placed the phone on the table.

A message was open.

The sender:

Derek.

Skylar frowned.

“He's in custody.”

Alvarez nodded.

“He is.”

“So how did he send this?”

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

The message contained coordinates.

Their current location.

Then another.

A bank account number.

Then a final instruction:

Move Skylar before dawn.

Skylar stared.

“Derek ordered someone to move me?”

“Looks like it.”

“But why?”

Alvarez's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

Then he looked at Skylar.

“We found Victor.”

“Where?”

“Miami airport.”

Skylar exhaled.

“He was leaving?”

“No.”

“He was arriving.”

The next morning, investigators uncovered another surprise.

Victor had voluntarily surrendered.

He wanted immunity.

In exchange for testimony.

He claimed Derek and Suzanne had been stealing from the network.

He also claimed Derek had planned to kill Skylar.

Skylar struggled to process it.

“Why testify now?”

Victor answered through his attorney.

“Because Derek kept records.”

“What records?”

“The original ledger.”

A hidden ledger.

Names.

Payments.

Victims.

Insurance policies.

Property values.

Everything.

Victor told investigators where it was.

Inside a storage unit rented under Derek's name.

Police searched it.

They found the ledger.

But they also found something unexpected.

A wedding photograph.

Skylar's.

She stared at it.

Why would Derek keep it?

Alvarez turned the photograph over.

On the back was handwriting.

Phase Four: Skylar signs everything.

Underneath:

Phase Five: accident.

And beside that:

Phase Six: collect.

Skylar closed her eyes.

There was no misunderstanding anymore.

No accident.

No rage.

No family drama.

It had been a business plan.

Her marriage was part of the plan.

Her apartment was part of the plan.

Her money was part of the plan.

Even her fear had been part of the plan.

Mara said softly:

“You survived the plan.”

Skylar opened her eyes.

“No.”

May you like

She looked at the photograph.

“I ruined it.”
