Chapter 14 - The Man Who Never DiedDaniel's father had never died.

He had staged his death.
And everyone who believed otherwise had become useful to him.
Including Daniel.
Including Eleanor.
Including Adrian.
Including my mother.
He had spent decades controlling people by giving them different pieces of the truth.
He told Daniel that Adrian was dead.
He told Adrian that Daniel betrayed him.
He told Eleanor that both sons were dangerous.
He told my mother that my father was killed because of the ledger.
He told me nothing.
Because I was the final piece.
My father hadn't merely hidden evidence in the wedding ring.
He had hidden something else.
A recording.
A list.
A transaction trail proving who had ordered his murder.
And the evidence was now inside my possession.
Daniel's father looked at me.
"You have something that belongs to me."
"Go to hell."
He smiled.
"Your father said the same thing."
Daniel stepped between us.
"You're not touching her."
His father laughed.
"Still pretending to be noble."
Daniel's face changed.
"You killed Father."
"No."
"You killed Thomas Vale."
"Yes."
The room went silent.
My mother's hand tightened around mine.
"Why?"
"Because he refused to cooperate."
"And my mother?"
"She became inconvenient."
I stared at him.
"Did you kill her?"
"No."
He smiled.
"I let her live."
My stomach turned.
"Why?"
"Because I knew one day she'd lead you back to me."
Daniel's father looked toward Daniel.
"And you did beautifully."
Daniel stared at him.
"You used me."
"Of course."
"You used every woman."
"Of course."
"You used my mother."
"Of course."
Adrian stepped forward.
"You'll pay for this."
His father looked at him.
"You survived."
"You tried to erase me."
"And yet here you are."
The confrontation ended when the police arrived.
Mara had secretly contacted a federal investigator.
But Daniel's father had one last card.
He looked at me.
"Before they arrest me, ask your husband one question."
I turned.
"Daniel."
He looked terrified.
"Ask him who put the note on the sheet."
My blood ran cold.
"You said you did."
Daniel shook his head.
"I lied."
"What?"
"I didn't put it there."
My mother stood.
"Then who did?"
The old man smiled.
"Her."
Everyone looked at my mother.
I couldn't move.
My mother began to cry.
"I had to warn you."
"Why didn't you tell me directly?"
"Because Daniel's father was listening."
I stared at her.
"Then why use the wedding night?"
She looked toward me.
"Because I knew you would never ignore something you found in your own bed."
The truth was enormous.
But there was one thing I still didn't understand.
"Why the message?"
My mother hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Because I knew Daniel would eventually betray you."
She was right.
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I took off my wedding ring.
I placed it on the table.
"It's over."
Then his father's smile faded.
Because suddenly his eyes were on the ring.
"That's impossible."
He stared at it.
"What?"
The microfilm was missing.
Someone had taken it.
I looked around.
Nobody moved.
Then Adrian reached into his pocket.
He pulled out the strip.
He looked at me.
May you like
"I'm sorry."
The lights went out.
