Chapter 11 - There had been a second passenger.I couldn't understand.

“There was no one else.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Not in the cabin.”

“Then who?”

“The pilot.”

“The pilot survived?”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

“The helicopter wasn't supposed to land.”

The realization hit me.

Richard hadn't planned to return alone.

He had planned to die too.

Or at least make it look that way.

The helicopter had been part of a larger plan.

Ethan explained that Richard had hired a backup pilot under a false identity.

The original pilot had refused to cooperate.

Two days before the flight, he had vanished.

The second pilot took his place.

Nobody had noticed.

Except Ethan.

Because Ethan had seen the man's face before.

He was former Moretti security.

I looked at Claire.

“We need the helicopter logs.”

“Already requested.”

“Can they be altered?”

Claire nodded.

“Which means we need an independent copy.”

Ethan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small drive.

“Your father kept backups.”

I took it.

“What is on this?”

“Everything.”

We returned to the safe house.

The drive contained thousands of files.

Financial records.

Medical studies.

Private communications.

And video.

One folder was marked:

ORION / FAMILY AUTHORIZATION

I opened it.

A video appeared.

My father sat at a desk.

He looked tired.

Older.

Afraid.

“If you're watching this,” he said, “then either I am dead or the system has been compromised.”

My hands shook.

He continued.

“I made one mistake.”

He paused.

“I believed blood was stronger than ambition.”

The next image showed Richard.

He was younger.

Maybe twenty-five.

Standing beside my father.

My father spoke off-camera.

“Richard, you are my nephew.”

Richard answered:

“And your heir?”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Then what am I?”

“My insurance.”

The video ended.

A second file started automatically.

My father explained that Richard had been included in Orion as a contingency.

If the Hayes bloodline failed, Richard could activate limited access.

But only limited access.

He could never control the full system.

Unless he acquired the second genetic key.

Mine.

And the third.

My child.

My father's final message contained one sentence that made the entire room silent.

Richard has been trying to create the third key since before you were married.

I closed the laptop.

My hands were shaking.

“He manipulated my pregnancy.”

Ethan nodded.

“Your father suspected it.”

“Then why didn't he stop Richard?”

“Because he died first.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you let me marry him?”

“I didn't.”

“What?”

“I warned your father.”

She looked down.

“Your father told me Richard was necessary.”

“Necessary for what?”

“Because someone had to remain close enough to watch him.”

I stared at her.

“You mean my marriage was surveillance?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“It became one.”

Then the lights went out.

Every light.

The entire property fell into darkness.

Claire raised her weapon.

“Someone cut the power.”

The baby moved beneath my hand.

Ethan pulled me behind the table.

A sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Evelyn whispered:

“We need to leave.”

Claire shook her head.

“Too late.”

A man's voice came through the darkness.

“Evelyn.”

She froze.

The voice was calm.

Familiar.

Richard.

“I know you've been helping her.”

He paused.

“I also know the baby is mine.”

Ethan looked at me.

Richard continued.

“Open the door.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“Fine.”

A window shattered.

Men rushed inside.

Gunfire erupted.

Claire dragged me toward the basement.

Ethan fired back.

I ran.

Then a man grabbed my arm.

I screamed.

He whispered:

“Don't be afraid.”

It was Alexander.

Richard's brother.

And he said:

“I'm here to save you.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked toward the chaos upstairs.

“Because Richard just killed our mother.”

My blood froze.

“Which mother?”

Alexander answered:

“Sophia Moretti.”

Richard's mother.

The woman who had been behind the entire plan.

Alexander pulled me toward the exit.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“And your sister is next.”
