Chapter 13 - The Final MarriageThey took me beneath the city.

An underground facility hidden beneath an abandoned government building.

I was strapped to a chair.

My father stood behind the glass.

My mother watched from another room.

Ethan was nowhere.

Daniel was missing.

Everything had fallen apart.

The scientist standing beside the machine explained what Blackfall really was.

Not an erasure system.

Not an identity replacement system.

A command network.

Every sleeper identity contained one final instruction.

But the system needed a master key.

Me.

My DNA.

My memories.

My neural patterns.

I was the master key.

My father stepped into the room.

“You were born for this.”

“No.”

“You were trained for this.”

“No.”

“You were conditioned for this.”

I laughed.

“You really love that word.”

He stared.

“You could control governments.”

“I don't want to control anything.”

“You could end wars.”

“By controlling people?”

“Yes.”

“Then you're not ending war.”

I looked directly at him.

“You're becoming the war.”

He smiled.

“You sound like your mother.”

“That's the nicest thing you've ever said.”

He left.

The scientists began the procedure.

I closed my eyes.

And remembered.

Everything.

Blackfall.

The soldiers.

The first woman we rescued.

The families.

The betrayals.

My mother.

My father.

Ethan.

Then something clicked.

Not in the machine.

In my memory.

I remembered Ethan whispering during our wedding.

Not the words everyone heard.

The real words.

“I'm sorry. She'll remember.”

He hadn't been warning my mother.

He had been warning me.

He knew.

He knew I would eventually understand.

The machine activated.

Screens filled with data.

Millions of identities.

Millions of sleeper subjects.

The system asked for authorization.

I smiled.

Then I entered the one thing nobody had expected.

A refusal.

The system rejected it.

So I entered another.

My father's identity.

The network recognized him.

Then I changed one parameter.

Target acquisition.

Instead of the sleeper subjects receiving orders...

The orders reversed.

Every sleeper agent received the same message.

REMEMBER.

Across the world, people woke.

In military bases.

In hospitals.

In government buildings.

In corporate offices.

Children woke from nightmares.

Adults remembered things they had never lived.

Families discovered hidden files.

Governments discovered missing agents.

Blackfall began collapsing.

My father stormed into the room.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

“I gave everyone their memories back.”

He raised his weapon.

Before he could fire, the door opened.

Ethan stood there.

Weak.

Bleeding.

Alive.

He shot the gun from my father's hand.

My father stared at him.

“How?”

Ethan smiled.

“I've survived worse husbands.”

Then the facility alarms began screaming.

My father laughed.

“You think you've won?”

The lights turned red.

He looked at the screens.

His expression changed.

“One final protocol.”

I looked at the monitor.

A message appeared.

PRIMARY SUBJECT REJECTED.

Then another.

SECONDARY SUBJECT REQUIRED.

Ethan stared.

I stared.

My father smiled.

“The system needs a replacement.”

May you like

And the screen identified the new primary subject.

Ethan Cross.
