Chapter 5 - THE REAL BETRAYALJulian looked different underground.

There was no gentle husband left.
No polite smile.
No carefully measured words.
Only cold calculation.
He pressed the gun against Mason’s chest.
“Drop the key.”
Mason didn’t move.
Julian glanced at me.
“Tell him.”
“Mason.”
My brother slowly dropped the brass key.
Julian picked it up.
Then he turned toward the woman in the chair.
My mother.
Except she was smiling.
Not crying.
Not trembling.
Smiling.
I looked between them.
“Mom?”
She rose.
“You grew up beautifully.”
I took a step backward.
“You’re working with him.”
Her smile disappeared.
“I never wanted it to come to this.”
“But you helped him.”
“I helped myself.”
Those four words cut deeper than anything Julian had done.
Mason stared at her.
“You made a deal.”
She looked at him.
“I made a deal because I wanted to live.”
“You let Dad die.”
“I watched him die.”
My mother’s voice cracked.
“I watched your father get into that car knowing it had been sabotaged.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who sabotaged it?”
She looked at Julian.
“His father.”
Julian remained silent.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because your father had discovered the ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The black ledger.”
Julian held up the brass key.
“It opens the final compartment.”
Mason stepped forward.
“You killed our parents for money.”
Julian laughed softly.
“No.”
He turned to me.
“We killed them because your father was going to expose everyone.”
“Everyone?”
“Politicians. Judges. Executives. Police officers.”
He paused.
“And people in your own family.”
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt something inside me fracture.
“Who?”
Julian looked at Mason.
“Your brother.”
Mason froze.
My mother whispered:
“Mason saw the crash.”
I turned.
“What?”
“When he was sixteen, he found the men who caused it.”
Mason said nothing.
“And he saw Julian’s father.”
I looked at my husband.
Julian smiled.
“You finally understand.”
“You knew Mason could walk.”
“Of course.”
“Then why let him pretend?”
“Because a harmless cripple is easy to ignore.”
Mason’s eyes filled with rage.
“You monitored me.”
“Yes.”
“You changed my medical records.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened doctors.”
“Yes.”
I stared at Julian.
“Why marry me?”
His answer came immediately.
“To find the ledger.”
Silence.
Three years of marriage collapsed in one sentence.
“You never loved me.”
“No.”
I felt tears burn my eyes.
Julian walked toward me.
“I needed access to your family.”
“And Chloe?”
“She was the insurance policy.”
My mother looked down.
“And the pregnancy?”
Julian smiled.
“Not mine.”
Chloe appeared in the doorway.
She looked terrified.
Julian turned toward her.
“Tell Valerie.”
Chloe shook her head.
“Tell her who the father is.”
Chloe began crying.
Then she whispered:
“Mason.”
My brother’s face went white.
I stared at him.
He looked at Chloe.
Neither of them spoke.
May you like
Julian laughed.
And then the vault doors slammed shut.
