Chapter 11 - The Land Beneath the CompanyDaniel had lied about more than money.

He had lied about ownership.

Carter Construction Group did not control all the land used in the redevelopment projects.

Daniel personally owned several parcels through hidden trusts.

We found the records the next morning.

The land had been purchased years earlier.

Long before anyone publicly announced the redevelopment.

“That means he knew.”

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

“How?”

“The plans were leaked.”

“By Marcus?”

“Likely.”

I looked at the records.

Every purchase was routed through one legal office.

Evelyn's.

I turned to her.

“You handled these trusts.”

“Yes.”

“You said you didn't know.”

“I didn't know the final beneficiary.”

“Then who did?”

She hesitated.

“Someone used my firm.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

She looked exhausted.

“My junior partner was murdered three years ago.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He was investigating the trusts.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know whom to trust.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So when my father warned me about the person protecting me, he might have meant you.”

“He might have.”

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

He called again.

Then sent a message.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Another.

COME TO THE OLD OFFICE ALONE.

Another.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL LEDGER.

I showed Evelyn.

“This is bait.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because the original ledger contains names.”

“Names of everyone involved?”

“Yes.”

“Then we need it.”

We went to the old office.

The building had been condemned after a fire.

The basement remained.

Dark.

Dusty.

Half collapsed.

I found the hidden room beneath the foundation.

Inside was a table.

A chair.

And a locked metal box.

No Daniel.

No father.

No ledger.

I opened the box.

Inside was a tape recorder.

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

“If Daniel brought you here, he wants you to believe he finally has control.”

A pause.

“He doesn't.”

I looked at Evelyn.

The tape continued.

“The real ledger is not a book.”

“What?”

“It is a person.”

The recording stopped.

I stared.

“A person?”

Evelyn looked confused.

Then a light flickered.

Footsteps.

We turned.

A man stepped from the darkness.

Richard Mercer.

He raised both hands.

“I don't want to hurt you.”

Evelyn moved in front of me.

“You're under investigation.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because your father told me to keep you alive.”

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

“Where is my father?”

Richard swallowed.

“He's dying.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“He has been sick for months.”

“Then why fake his death?”

“Because someone wanted him dead.”

“Who?”

Richard looked toward the stairs.

“Marcus.”

“You worked for him.”

“I worked for your father.”

“You moved millions.”

“To protect the evidence.”

I stepped forward.

“Then why did you steal?”

“I didn't.”

“You did.”

“No. I made it look like theft.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“To create a criminal trail.”

“For whom?”

“For Marcus.”

Richard handed me a folder.

Inside were transactions.

Every shell company.

Every transfer.

Every payment.

And every payment eventually connected back to Marcus.

“You created fake theft so investigators would follow the wrong trail?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Daniel think he was stealing?”

“Because Marcus told him he was.”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“Your husband isn't the mastermind.”

“Then what is he?”

“A disposable partner.”

I felt a strange sadness.

Daniel had spent years believing he was controlling everyone.

He had simply been useful.

Then Richard said the sentence that changed everything.

“There is one thing you haven't discovered.”

“What?”

“Your father's final account.”

“Where?”

Richard pointed to Noah's backpack.

“The second account isn't financial.”

I stared.

“What is it?”

“It's evidence.”

My phone buzzed.

A photo appeared.

Noah.

Standing outside school.

A man's hand resting on his shoulder.

The message said:

COME ALONE OR YOUR SON DISAPPEARS.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Richard saw the screen.

“No.”

“What?”

“They know about Noah.”

“Who?”

Richard grabbed my arm.

“You have to understand.”

“Understand what?”

He looked at me.

“Your son isn't just your son anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Richard's face went pale.

“He is the beneficiary of everything your father stole from them.”
