Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO KNEW THE WHOLE STORYThe stolen death certificate was found two days later.

Not at Daniel's office.
Not at Margaret's home.
In a private medical archive connected to Uncle Richard.
That was when we knew.
He wasn't simply hiding something.
He was actively cleaning the past.
Evelyn obtained a warrant.
Richard disappeared.
His office was empty.
His house was empty.
His bank accounts had been drained.
Someone had warned him.
We searched every connection.
Then Victoria found something.
A recording.
From twenty-five years earlier.
Her father's voice.
“Richard knows.”
Another voice.
My grandfather.
“He has the ledger.”
Victor:
“If he destroys it, we're finished.”
My grandfather:
“He won't destroy it.”
Victor:
“Why?”
My grandfather paused.
“Because he believes he can use it.”
I looked at Evelyn.
“The ledger.”
“The ownership ledger.”
“Yes.”
“What can it prove?”
Victoria answered.
“Who actually owned the company.”
“And?”
“And who took control without authorization.”
My eyes widened.
“Richard.”
“Richard and Daniel's family.”
Suddenly, everything aligned.
The marriage.
The money.
The company.
The house.
Daniel's father's instructions.
The secret transfers.
He hadn't married me for access to the house.
He married me because the company was the key.
But why did he need my marriage to complete it?
Evelyn found the answer.
A clause in the family trust.
Control transfers upon legally recognized domestic partnership only when no independent trustee objects.
I stared at the document.
“Daniel needed me.”
“Yes.”
“Not just married.”
“Legally attached.”
“So if I signed something…”
“You could have transferred control.”
I remembered all the documents.
The refinancing.
The shareholder updates.
The “routine” signatures.
They had spent years trying to make me sign one page.
One page could have changed everything.
And I had refused.
Not because I was suspicious.
Because I was exhausted.
Fate had protected me through stubbornness.
Then a new discovery came.
Sabrina wasn't simply Daniel's mistress.
She worked for Richard.
Her messages weren't romantic.
Some were operational.
Meeting times.
Account information.
Names.
Sabrina had been watching me.
She had been collecting information.
I asked Marcus:
“Where is she?”
“Missing.”
“Of course.”
Then Chloe called.
Her voice was shaking.
“Natalie.”
“What?”
“I need to tell you something.”
“Where are you?”
“Not safe.”
My heart tightened.
“Chloe, tell me where you are.”
“I found something in Mom's room.”
“What?”
“A box.”
“What kind?”
“Your name is on it.”
I closed my eyes.
“Do not open it.”
“I already did.”
“What did you find?”
She whispered:
“Photos.”
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
“From when?”
“Before your wedding.”
I stopped.
Chloe continued:
“There are photos of you meeting Daniel.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“I mean years before you met him.”
Impossible.
Then she sent one.
I stared at it.
Daniel was younger.
I was younger.
We were standing at a charity event.
I looked happy.
I remembered the event.
I had gone with my grandfather.
I had never met Daniel there.
Or had I?
I enlarged the photo.
He was watching me.
Not casually.
Intently.
Another photo.
Daniel speaking to my grandfather.
Another.
Daniel shaking my father's old colleague's hand.
A third.
Daniel entering a building owned by Richard.
This wasn't coincidence.
He had been circling my family long before he became my husband.
Then Chloe sent another image.
A document.
A handwritten note.
Margaret's handwriting.
Daniel has done everything exactly as planned.
I stopped breathing.
Chloe's message came immediately after.
Mom knew.
I closed my eyes.
Margaret had not been manipulated by Daniel.
She had participated.
Then the next message arrived.
There's one more person in the room with her.
A photo.
Margaret.
Richard.
Sabrina.
Daniel.
Together.
All four.
Recent.
I stared at it.
“Where was this taken?”
Chloe replied:
“Yesterday.”
My blood ran cold.
Yesterday, Richard was supposedly missing.
Yet he had been meeting my husband.
And Chloe was with Margaret.
Which meant someone had lied.
I called Chloe.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then my phone received a video.
Chloe was sitting in a dark room.
Her face was bruised.
A voice behind the camera spoke.
“Tell Natalie the truth.”
Chloe cried.
“I didn't know what they were doing.”
The voice said:
“Then tell her.”
Chloe looked at the camera.
“Natalie…”
She swallowed.
“Margaret wasn't planning to take your money.”
I leaned closer to the screen.
“What?”
Chloe whispered:
“She was planning to take your name.”
The video ended.
I stared at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?”
She answered immediately.
“The trust.”
“What about it?”
“She is trying to have you declared financially incompetent.”
My stomach dropped.
Evelyn continued.
“Then she could be appointed temporary guardian of your assets.”
I stared at the screen.
All those insults.
All that abuse.
The threats.
Maybe they weren't random.
They were building a case.
Trying to make me look unstable.
Trying to make me look dangerous.
Trying to make me look like someone incapable of controlling my own money.
I looked at the bruised photograph of Chloe.
“Where is she?”
Marcus tracked the video metadata.
An abandoned warehouse.
We went there with law enforcement.
But by the time we arrived, Chloe was gone.
On the floor was a single envelope.
My name.
Inside:
A photograph of Daniel and me on our wedding day.
And beneath it:
YOU WERE NEVER THE ENDGAME.
I turned it over.
A second sentence.
YOU WERE THE KEY.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
He laughed softly.
“You finally understand.”
“Where is Chloe?”
“She isn't your problem.”
“What do you want?”
“What I wanted from the beginning.”
“Which is?”
May you like
His voice became cold.
“Your signature.”
