Chapter 19 - The Third OptionI had spent my entire life being told there were only two choices.

Obey.

Or run.

Stay silent.

Or die.

Trust someone.

Or trust no one.

Orchid had been built on the same philosophy.

Control.

Or destruction.

I rejected both.

I rewrote the access protocol.

Not to take control.

Not to destroy the data.

To release it.

Every patient file.

Every trial report.

Every hidden payment.

Every altered medical record.

Every name.

Every internal communication.

I sent it all to a public evidence network.

Detective Bennett stared at the screen.

"Can you do that?"

"Yes."

Nate looked at me.

"What happens when it's public?"

"They can't bury it."

My mother shouted through the monitor.

"Hannah, stop."

I looked at her.

"No."

"You'll expose everyone."

"That's the point."

"People will panic."

"People have a right to know."

"You don't understand the consequences."

"I understand the consequences of silence."

I pressed publish.

The archive went live.

The world saw Orchid.

Within minutes, news networks began reporting.

Hospitals locked down.

Government agencies issued statements.

Executives disappeared.

Vesper's servers were exposed.

And the Turner family name collapsed in real time.

Susan was arrested.

Robert was detained.

Dr. Avery was captured trying to leave the country.

Jonathan surrendered.

Thomas Mercer gave a full deposition.

My mother vanished before police reached her location.

And Nate?

He disappeared.

Again.

I woke the next morning in a hospital room.

Dr. Harris stood beside me.

"You did it."

"Did I?"

"The network is offline."

"Patients?"

"Stable."

I closed my eyes.

"What about Nate?"

He didn't answer.

I knew.

"Where is he?"

"Missing."

I looked toward the window.

Of course.

The man who had spent eight years disappearing behind lies had disappeared one more time.

I hated that part of me still wanted to find him.

Two weeks passed.

The investigation spread across three countries.

I testified.

Khloe testified.

Jonathan testified.

The name Turner became synonymous with scandal.

Then one evening, I received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Nate.

Alive.

Standing outside a small cabin.

On the back, five words.

I OWE YOU THE LAST TRUTH.

There was also a key.

And an address.

I went alone.

The cabin stood deep in northern Wisconsin.

Snow surrounded it.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, Nate was sitting by the fire.

He looked thinner.

Older.

But alive.

I stopped in the doorway.

"You came."

"Why?"

He looked at me.

"Because you deserve the truth."

"I already know enough."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You know what Orchid was."

"Then what don't I know?"

He reached into a drawer.

Pulled out an old cassette tape.

"My wedding day."

I frowned.

"What about it?"

"You've seen the video."

"Yes."

"You saw me talking about marrying you."

"Yes."

"There was something after that."

He inserted the tape.

The recording played.

A younger Nate spoke.

"If they ever activate Orchid, Hannah must never know she is Subject One."

A voice answered him.

My mother.

"Why?"

Nate said,

"Because she'll destroy it."

I stared.

Then his voice broke.

"That's why I have to make her hate me."

The tape ended.

I looked at him.

"You spent eight years making me think you didn't love me."

He nodded.

"It was the only way I knew to keep you away."

"Then why tell me now?"

He reached for another file.

Inside was a copy of a marriage certificate.

Mine.

But beneath it was another document.

A second marriage registration.

Dated two years before our wedding.

My name.

His name.

And a third name.

Eleanor Mercer.

I stared at it.

"What is this?"

Nate's face went white.

"That's the truth no one knew."

He whispered,

"You were legally married before we ever met."

I looked at him.

"To whom?"

He answered.

"Your sister."

I stopped breathing.

"I don't have a sister."

May you like

Nate looked at me.

"You did."
