Chapter 1 - “WHO IS YOUR FATHER?”“Who is your father?”

Adrian’s voice barely sounded like his own.
He stood in the middle of our marble foyer, staring at me as if I had suddenly become a stranger.
For three years, I had watched that same man charm investors, dominate boardrooms, and shake hands with politicians.
I had watched him build a reputation around a lie.
My lie.
And now, for the first time, he was looking at me without arrogance.
He was afraid.
I slowly rose from the floor.
Every muscle in my back burned where the riding crop had landed.
Vanessa stood behind him, one hand pressed protectively against her stomach.
Her face had gone pale.
“Adrian,” she whispered, “what does she mean by destroy his life?”
He didn’t answer.
His phone rang again.
He looked at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Then another.
His fingers trembled as he unlocked the phone.
“Why are all the accounts restricted?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What accounts?”
“Everything.”
He swallowed.
“The operating account. Payroll. Acquisition funds. Credit lines.”
His breathing became shallow.
“This has to be a mistake.”
I almost laughed.
A mistake.
That was what he had called every lie he told me.
Every time he came home smelling like Vanessa.
Every time he secretly transferred money from one company to another.
Every time he humiliated me in front of his friends.
Every time he told me I was lucky to have his last name.
He had spent three years believing the empire belonged to him.
It never had.
I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth.
“You asked who my father is.”
Adrian stared at me.
“Yes.”
I stepped closer.
“My father is Julian Ashford.”
The name landed like a gunshot.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Adrian went completely still.
“You’re lying.”
I shook my head.
“My father owns Ashford Capital.”
Vanessa stared at Adrian.
“The Ashford Capital?”
I nodded.
“The same one that owns private banks in six countries.”
Adrian’s face drained of color.
“The same company that financed your first acquisition,” I continued.
He stared at me.
“That wasn't your father?”
“No.”
“It was you?”
I smiled bitterly.
“It was mine.”
His knees almost buckled.
Three years ago, Adrian had come to me with nothing but a business plan and an ego large enough to fill a stadium.
He called himself a visionary.
My father called him ambitious.
I called him my future husband.
So I convinced my father to give Adrian a chance.
But there had been conditions.
No public connection.
No family name.
No publicity.
Adrian would never know.
He needed to believe he was building the company himself.
My father wanted to know whether the man I loved could become powerful without becoming corrupted by power.
For three years, Adrian passed.
Until Vanessa appeared.
And everything changed.
“You knew,” he whispered.
“I knew everything.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because my father was right.”
His jaw tightened.
“About what?”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“About you.”
A sound came from the driveway.
Multiple engines.
Then the mansion gates opened.
Three black SUVs rolled onto the property.
Security officers stepped out.
Adrian backed away from the windows.
“What did you do?”
“I didn't do anything.”
The front doors opened.
A man in a charcoal suit entered.
He was my father's chief legal counsel.
Behind him came two investigators.
Then four security officers.
Adrian stared at them.
“Who authorized you to enter my property?”
The lawyer looked at me.
“Mrs. Vale?”
I nodded.
He turned to Adrian.
“This property is under Ashford Trust ownership.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“You have twenty minutes to collect personal belongings.”
Vanessa gasped.
“This is our house!”
“No,” I said quietly.
“It was never yours.”
Adrian's face twisted with rage.
“You manipulated me.”
I stared at him.
“You hit me.”
Silence.
“Twenty times.”
His eyes flickered.
“You drove this marriage into the ground.”
“You stole from companies my father built.”
“You slept with the woman standing behind you.”
“And tonight, you tried to beat me into signing a divorce.”
I took one step toward him.
“So don't stand there and tell me I manipulated you.”
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“Adrian!”
We turned.
She was staring at her phone.
Her face had changed.
“What?” he asked.
She turned the screen toward him.
A photograph.
Of us.
Taken years ago.
Me.
My father.
And Adrian.
But in the background stood another man.
A man Adrian recognized.
His expression collapsed.
“That's impossible.”
I looked at the photograph.
I had seen it before.
But I had never understood why my father kept it hidden.
Adrian whispered one sentence.
“That man is dead.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He backed away from the picture.
“That man died fifteen years ago.”
My father's lawyer suddenly looked uncomfortable.
He reached inside his briefcase.
“Mrs. Vale.”
“What?”
“There is something your father wants you to see.”
He handed me a black envelope.
My name was written across it.
In my father's handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
And one sentence.
You were never the only secret in this marriage.
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
And for the first time that night, I realized something terrifying.
May you like
My father hadn't called to save me.
He had called because something far bigger had just begun.
