Chapter 14: The Forgotten Annex

The metallic clang echoed once.
Then silence.
Rain tapped softly against the cracked windows of the abandoned research annex.
Agent Michael Reeves raised one hand.
"No one moves."
Lisa Chen unholstered her flashlight.
Two federal agents stepped forward cautiously.
Sarah stood between Dr. Hendricks and Mrs. Carter, her eyes fixed on the dark entrance.
The building looked abandoned.
But abandoned buildings didn't usually make fresh noises.
Reeves spoke quietly into his radio.
"Perimeter team, report."
A burst of static.
Then a reply.
"No movement outside."
"So if someone is here..."
Lisa finished the sentence.
"...they're still inside."
The front doors creaked open with surprising ease.
A wave of stale air drifted into the hallway.
Dust floated through the flashlight beams.
The lobby had been untouched for decades.
Old directory signs still hung on the walls.
Most of the lettering had faded.
Sarah slowly walked forward.
"This place feels..."
Dr. Hendricks looked around.
"...familiar?"
Sarah nodded.
"I've never been here."
"But somehow..."
She couldn't explain it.
The group entered the main corridor.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Water dripped steadily from a cracked ceiling.
Every footstep echoed through the empty building.
Lisa paused near a bulletin board.
"There are photographs."
Most had faded beyond recognition.
One remained clear enough to read.
Research Team - 1994
A dozen scientists stood together, smiling at the camera.
Dr. Hendricks stopped walking.
Her expression changed.
"I know him."
She pointed to one of the researchers.
Professor Alan Whitaker.
A pioneering neuroscientist whose early work Sarah had cited several times.
"He disappeared from academia after this project closed," Dr. Hendricks murmured.
"No one ever explained why."
Further down the hallway, Reeves noticed something out of place.
Fresh footprints.
Not dusty.
Not faded.
Recent.
He crouched.
"Less than a day old."
The tracks led toward the basement.
Sarah swallowed.
"Whoever came here..."
"...wanted us to follow."
Reeves looked back at her.
"Or wanted someone else to."
The basement door stood half open.
A rusted sign still clung to it.
ARCHIVE STORAGE
Lisa pushed the door wider.
The beam of her flashlight swept across rows of metal shelves.
Most were empty.
Some had collapsed.
In the far corner sat a single gray filing cabinet.
Unlike everything else...
It wasn't covered in dust.
Someone had opened it recently.
Reeves approached carefully.
Inside were only three folders.
Nothing more.
Each carried a handwritten label.
PROJECT AURORA
ETHICS REVIEW
PERSONNEL
Sarah frowned.
"I've never heard of Project Aurora."
Dr. Hendricks shook her head.
"Neither have I."
"That's impossible."
"If a university project existed..."
"I should know its name."
Lisa opened the personnel folder.
Most pages had been removed.
Only the last sheet remained.
It listed six researchers.
Five names had been blacked out.
Only one remained visible.
Dr. Alan Whitaker
At the bottom of the page someone had handwritten a note decades earlier.
Project terminated. All records transferred.
Transferred where?
The destination had been torn away.
Meanwhile, one of the agents called from the opposite side of the room.
"Agent Reeves."
He pointed toward the concrete floor.
"There are scrape marks."
Heavy scrape marks.
As though a large metal object had been dragged away only recently.
The trail ended at a section of wall.
Lisa knocked against it.
Solid.
She knocked again.
A different sound.
"Hollow."
Reeves examined the bricks.
One looked newer than the others.
He pressed it gently.
A loud mechanical click echoed through the basement.
Everyone stepped back.
Slowly...
A section of the wall slid open.
Behind it lay a narrow concrete passage.
Fresh air drifted out.
Someone had been using it.
Recently.
Sarah stared into the darkness.
"My grandmother's coordinates..."
Mrs. Carter nodded.
"They led us here."
But not to an abandoned laboratory.
To a hidden passage.
The tunnel stretched nearly fifty yards before ending at a reinforced steel door.
Unlike the rest of the building...
The door looked modern.
Electronic keypad.
Biometric scanner.
New hinges.
Someone had maintained it.
For years.
Lisa examined the lock.
"This isn't university equipment."
"No."
Reeves agreed.
"It was installed long after the annex closed."
Sarah looked around.
"This place wasn't abandoned."
"It was hidden."
Before anyone could respond...
The keypad suddenly lit up by itself.
A calm computerized voice filled the tunnel.
Identity recognized.
Everyone froze.
No one had touched the keypad.
The voice continued.
Welcome back... Sarah Thompson.
Sarah's heart pounded.
"I've never been here."
The scanner emitted a soft green light.
Then the steel door unlocked with a heavy click.
It slowly opened inward.
Inside was a brightly lit laboratory.
Pristine.
Modern.
Computers hummed quietly.
Medical equipment gleamed under fluorescent lights.
Not a speck of dust.
As though scientists had walked out only minutes earlier.
On the nearest desk lay a single envelope.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were five words.
May you like
For Sarah. Open Alone.
