Chapter 10 - The Family GhostThomas led them through an old service passage beneath the church.

Samuel followed with Avery pressed against his side.
Nora came behind them.
“Where are we going?”
“Somewhere cameras can't see.”
Samuel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in this story seems to know about cameras.”
Thomas glanced back.
“You're finally learning.”
They emerged behind a locked cemetery gate.
A black SUV waited.
Samuel refused to get inside.
“Start talking.”
Thomas turned.
“You don't have time.”
“I have time for one question.”
Samuel pointed the gun.
“Who killed Rachel?”
Thomas looked at Avery.
“Not here.”
“Who?”
Thomas's eyes narrowed.
“Your brother.”
Samuel's face hardened.
“My brother is standing in front of me.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Not me.”
He pulled a photograph from his coat.
It showed a younger man.
Same family.
Same eyes.
But not Samuel.
Not Thomas.
A third brother.
Daniel Vale.
Samuel stared.
“My father had another son.”
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel never died.”
“Then why has nobody heard of him?”
“Because our father erased him.”
“Why?”
Thomas laughed without humor.
“Because Daniel inherited the part of the business that could not be made legitimate.”
Samuel felt sick.
“Organized crime.”
Thomas didn't deny it.
Daniel Vale had controlled the family's illegal operations.
Ships.
Smuggling.
Bribes.
Disappearances.
Then he had vanished.
Thomas said:
“Jordan found him.”
Samuel's voice went quiet.
“When?”
“Six months before Rachel died.”
At the same time, Jordan opened Rachel's old storage room.
Madeline stood behind him.
“You said Daniel was dead.”
“I said he was gone.”
“You should have killed him.”
Jordan stopped.
“You don't talk about him like that.”
Madeline smiled.
“You fear him.”
Jordan stared at her.
“I fear what he knows.”
Madeline stepped closer.
“He knows Avery isn't your daughter.”
Jordan said nothing.
“He knows Rachel planned to leave you.”
Still nothing.
“He knows what happened on the bridge.”
Jordan turned.
“Enough.”
Madeline's smile disappeared.
“You can't protect everyone forever.”
Jordan walked toward the safe.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Rachel and another man.
Daniel Vale.
Behind them stood a newborn Avery.
Jordan stared at the photograph.
His hand shook.
Madeline noticed.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“She was Daniel's daughter.”
Jordan closed the safe.
“No.”
Madeline laughed.
“You married a woman carrying another man's child.”
“I loved her.”
“You loved her inheritance.”
Jordan turned sharply.
“Don't pretend you're innocent.”
Madeline stepped closer.
“You needed me.”
“And you needed me.”
“Exactly.”
They stood in silence.
Then a phone rang.
Jordan answered.
A voice said:
“Samuel has the ledger.”
Jordan's face turned white.
“Who is this?”
The caller said:
“Ask Madeline what she did the night Rachel died.”
Jordan looked at Madeline.
She went still.
The line went dead.
Samuel, Thomas, and Nora reached Thomas's hideout.
It was an abandoned boathouse.
Thomas placed the blue ledger on a table.
“You need to read the final section.”
Samuel opened it.
Rachel had written a chronology.
Every threat.
Every payment.
Every meeting.
The final entry was dated the night before her death.
11:00 p.m. Jordan arrived.
11:08 p.m. Madeline arrived.
11:17 p.m. Daniel Vale called.
11:22 p.m. Rachel leaves.
11:41 p.m. Black sedan appears.
Then:
11:47 p.m. Avery is moved.
Samuel stopped.
Avery had been moved?
Where?
He flipped the page.
The final line was written in trembling ink.
If Avery survives, she must never be returned to Jordan.
Samuel stared.
“She wasn't talking about a custody battle.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
“She was talking about something worse.”
Thomas nodded.
“Much worse.”
Samuel looked at the next page.
It contained a photograph.
Avery asleep in a car seat.
Beside her was a woman.
Samuel recognized her instantly.
Elaine.
The nanny.
Nora whispered:
“Why was Elaine with Avery the night Rachel died?”
Samuel looked at the door.
Then at Thomas.
“Where is Elaine now?”
May you like
Thomas's face darkened.
“Gone.”
