Chapter 1 - “WE ALL VOTED.”“We all voted,” Dad said, putting down his fork.

The words landed harder than the silverware.
“You’re not coming on the family cruise.”
For a few seconds, I honestly thought I had misheard him.
The restaurant was loud. Plates clattered. Someone laughed at the bar. Rain tapped against the windows.
Yet somehow, I heard every word.
I looked around the table.
Dad.
Mom.
Grandma.
My brother Matt.
And Lauren, my brother’s wife, smiling like she had just won something.
Lauren lifted her glass.
“It’s adults-only,” she said casually. “You know, for people with real jobs.”
Matt laughed.
Mom avoided my eyes.
Dad leaned back in his chair.
“We just think it’ll be better this way.”
Grandma took a sip of tea.
“Maybe next year, dear.”
Then she added the sentence that hurt most.
“If you finally do something with your life.”
Nobody defended me.
Nobody told her that was cruel.
Nobody even looked uncomfortable.
I slowly put my fork down.
“Got it.”
That was all I said.
I stood up.
“I’m going outside.”
Lauren smirked.
“Try not to miss us too much.”
I walked through the restaurant doors.
The rain immediately soaked my shoulders.
I pulled out my phone and pretended to take a call.
But I wasn't calling anyone.
I was opening my cruise reservation.
Five cabins.
Ocean-view rooms.
Flights.
Airport transfers.
Private excursions.
Dining packages.
Everything.
Everything was connected to one payment method.
Mine.
I stared at the screen.
Three months earlier, Lauren had called me crying.
“Please,” she had begged. “Just cover the deposit. My bonus is late.”
“I don't know, Lauren.”
“It’s only temporary. Two weeks. I swear.”
“You’ll pay me back?”
“Absolutely.”
So I had paid.
Then another expense appeared.
Then another.
Lauren never paid me back.
Instead, she became increasingly comfortable spending money that wasn't hers.
And somehow, tonight, I was the one being told I didn't belong.
I almost canceled everything right there.
One tap.
That was all it would take.
But revenge was never as satisfying when it was rushed.
So I locked my phone.
I went back inside.
I finished my dinner.
I smiled when everyone talked about the cruise.
Matt bragged about the upgraded suite.
Mom discussed formal night.
Lauren showed everyone matching outfits she had ordered.
I said nothing.
Two days later, Lauren posted a picture online.
Five matching luggage sets.
Five boarding passes.
A caption:
“FAMILY PARADISE IN THREE DAYS!”
I stared at the photo.
There was something almost poetic about it.
Five cabins.
But only four people had actually paid.
Friday night, the family group chat exploded.
Matt: Luggage tags are ready!
Mom: I can't believe it's almost here!
Dad: This is going to be our best trip ever.
Lauren sent a photo of herself holding champagne.
CAN’T WAIT FOR PARADISE!
I opened the reservation.
My thumb hovered over the cancellation button.
Then I remembered Grandma.
“Maybe next year.”
I smiled.
Cancel Booking.
One tap.
The screen refreshed.
BOOKING CANCELED.Ten minutes passed.
Then my phone started vibrating.
Matt.
Then Lauren.
Then Dad.
Message after message appeared.
Matt: Why did the confirmation disappear?
Lauren: WHY IS THE CARD DECLINED?
Dad: CALL ME. NOW.
Then the group chat exploded.
Mom: What happened???
Lauren: Someone canceled the reservation!
Matt: It says the whole booking was canceled.
Dad: WHO DID THIS?
I watched the messages stack up.
Finally, one appeared.
Lauren: Did you cancel the cruise?
I typed slowly.
Bon voyage.
Sent.
Silence.
Then my phone rang.
Lauren.
I declined.
Dad.
Declined.
Matt.
Declined.
Another message arrived.
Dad: You have exactly ten minutes to explain yourself.
I smiled.
For the first time that night, I wasn't angry.
I was calm.
Because I knew something they didn't.
The cancellation wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was what they were about to discover.
The cruise wasn't the only thing they had booked on my card.
And tomorrow morning, another payment was scheduled to process.
A very large one.
I opened my banking app.
The charge was labeled:
“FAMILY EMERGENCY FUND.”
Amount:
$18,500.
I stared at it.
My smile disappeared.
I had never authorized that.
May you like
And suddenly, I realized this wasn't about a cruise anymore.
Someone in my family had stolen my card information.
