Chapter 5 - My Husband's SecretI didn't confront Michael that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was afraid of what he might say.

He had been my husband for eleven years.

He had held Lily the day she was born.

He had cried when the doctor placed her in my arms.

He had taught her to ride a bicycle.

He had kissed her scraped knees.

If the DNA evidence connected him to Jonathan Vale, then everything I knew about my marriage had just cracked down the middle.

Daniel drove us home.

Lily fell asleep in the back seat.

I watched the city lights pass through the window.

“Did my husband know?”

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.

“I don't know.”

“Would you tell me if you did?”

“Yes.”

That answer frightened me.

When we arrived home, Michael was waiting.

He looked furious.

“You caused a scene at Margaret's party.”

I stared at him.

“Where were you?”

“At the party.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Where were you when Lily was chained outside?”

His eyes shifted.

“I didn't know.”

“Everyone knew.”

“I was inside.”

“Exactly.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Emma, this is getting out of control.”

“What do you know about Jonathan Vale?”

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

That tiny flicker.

Recognition.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“I don't know who that is.”

I laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

“You're lying.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Who told you?”

That was enough.

I backed away.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You knew that name.”

“Emma…”

“What is your connection to Jonathan Vale?”

Michael said nothing.

Behind him, our daughter appeared at the hallway entrance.

“Daddy?”

Michael turned.

Lily looked between us.

“Why are Mommy and Daddy fighting?”

Michael's expression softened instantly.

He knelt.

“Come here.”

Lily didn't move.

She looked at me first.

I nodded.

She walked toward him.

He hugged her.

For a moment, everything looked normal.

Then Michael whispered something into her hair.

I couldn't hear it.

But Daniel, standing behind me, did.

His face changed.

“What did you say to her?” I asked.

Michael looked up.

“Nothing.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Repeat it.”

Michael froze.

Then I heard the words from my daughter.

“Daddy said I should forget everything Grandma said.”

My blood turned cold.

Daniel stared at Michael.

“You knew this was coming.”

Michael stood.

“I was trying to protect them.”

“From what?”

Michael's eyes met mine.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

He didn't.

Instead, he walked toward the study.

I followed.

He opened a locked drawer.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one passport.

The passport belonged to a man named Jonathan Vale.

I looked at Michael.

“Why do you have this?”

He sat down.

“Because he was my father.”

Everything inside me went silent.

“What?”

Michael lowered his head.

“My mother told me he died when I was a child.”

I stared at the passport.

“But the DNA report…”

“I know.”

I felt sick.

“You're related to Jonathan.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily…”

Michael didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Lily was connected to the Vale family through him.

Which meant Margaret hadn't been trying to exclude my daughter from the family.

She had been trying to conceal the fact that Lily belonged at the center of it.

I picked up the passport.

“Where is Jonathan now?”

Michael looked at me.

Then whispered:

“I don't know.”

A noise came from the hallway.

We both turned.

Lily was gone.

My heart stopped.

“Lily?”

No answer.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom was empty.

The window was open.

A single piece of paper rested on her pillow.

I picked it up.

Three words were written in black ink.

STOP DIGGING, EMMA.

And beneath them was a photograph.

My daughter.

Taken that afternoon.

While she was chained outside.

May you like

Someone had been watching us.

All day.
