My Ex-Husband Humiliated Me at Dinner, Not Knowing I Secretly Owned His Entire Company

The icy water hit me without warning.

My ex-mother-in-law, Diane, smiled as it soaked my hair and dress.

“At least you finally took a bath.”

The table erupted in laughter.

My ex-husband, Brendan, laughed the loudest. Beside him, his new girlfriend Jessica smirked behind her wineglass.

I said nothing.

One hand rested over my pregnant belly as my daughter kicked inside me.

They thought I was a poor, helpless burden Brendan had been forced to support.

They were wrong.

They had no idea who they were humiliating.

The Persian rug beneath my chair? I had approved its purchase during the company's headquarters renovation.

The house they were sitting in? Paid for by the company I secretly owned.

And every paycheck they received came from me.

I quietly reached for my phone.

Jessica sneered. “Calling for a taxi?”

Diane laughed. “Brendan, give her some money and send her home.”

I ignored them.

I called one person.

Arthur, the company's Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs.

He answered immediately.

“Cassidy? What's wrong?”

I looked straight at Brendan.

“Activate Protocol Seven.”

Silence.

Arthur knew exactly what that meant.

“If I authorize this,” he said carefully, “your former husband's entire family could lose everything.”

I watched Brendan laugh.

“They already have.”

I ended the call.

Brendan frowned.

“Protocol Seven?”

He burst out laughing.

“What kind of pathetic game are you playing?”

I placed my phone on the table.

For the first time that evening, I smiled.

“It's not a game, Brendan.”

“It's the moment you find out who your boss really is.”
