Chapter 11 - The Hidden RoomSomebody Had Been Inside My House for MonthsDavid came running when I screamed.

The shadow was gone.

We searched every room.

Nothing.

No broken windows.

No open doors.

No obvious intruder.

Then Helen arrived.

She walked through the house carefully.

"You said the photograph was taken from inside?"

I nodded.

"Where?"

I showed her.

She zoomed in.

The angle was low.

Close to the dining room.

Helen turned slowly.

"There's a blind spot."

"What?"

She pointed toward the wall.

"The camera system doesn't cover that area."

David looked around.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Helen touched the wall.

"Not impossible."

She knocked.

Once.

Twice.

Then a hollow sound answered.

We stared at each other.

I stepped closer.

"That wall wasn't hollow."

Helen smiled without humor.

"Then why is it now?"

We opened the trim.

Behind the wall was a narrow panel.

It concealed a small passage.

I stepped back.

My house had a room I had never known existed.

Inside was dust.

Old wires.

A chair.

And a small table.

On the table sat a camera.

Still recording.

David whispered,

"Someone has been using this."

Helen checked the equipment.

"Recently."

I felt sick.

For months, someone had been watching us.

Watching me.

Watching Sarah.

Watching David.

And perhaps watching them fight over the house.

Then I saw the chair.

There was a coffee cup on the floor.

Still fresh.

Someone had been here recently.

We followed the passage.

It led toward the old garage wall.

The exterior door was locked.

The person had another way in.

We returned to the hidden room.

There was a shelf.

On it were folders.

I pulled the first one down.

My name.

The second.

David's.

The third.

Sarah's.

There were photographs of all of us.

Financial information.

Schedules.

Bank statements.

Even copies of my grocery receipts.

Someone had been collecting information for months.

Then Helen opened another folder.

"Priscilla."

I walked over.

Inside was a contract.

A surveillance agreement.

The client name had been blacked out.

But the signature remained.

I knew it.

Robert Bell.

He had hired someone to watch the house.

But why?

Helen kept searching.

Then she found a second contract.

Different client.

Same investigator.

I looked at the signature.

My stomach tightened.

The client was Sarah.

She had hired surveillance on her own father.

David stared at the paper.

"Why would she do that?"

I didn't know.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

"Because I knew he would kill me."

We turned.

Sarah stood there.

She looked exhausted.

"I found this room last month."

She stepped inside.

"My father didn't know I found it."

I stared at her.

"You knew someone was watching?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was scared."

"Of your father?"

"And someone worse."

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know his name."

Helen stepped toward her.

"What did your father owe?"

Sarah whispered,

"Everything."

Then she handed Helen another folder.

"These are the people he borrowed from."

Helen opened it.

Her expression changed.

"Priscilla."

She pointed to one name.

I read it.

Victor Hale.

A private financier.

The kind of man who never appeared in ordinary court records.

The kind of man who financed desperate people and collected when they failed.

Sarah looked at me.

"My father borrowed money from him."

"How much?"

"Four hundred thousand."

"And the house?"

Sarah swallowed.

"He told Victor he could get control of it."

My hands shook.

"And if he couldn't?"

Sarah looked toward the door.

"Then Victor said he'd collect another way."

A car engine sounded outside.

All three of us froze.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Sarah whispered:

"He's here."

A black SUV stopped in front of the house.

A man stepped out.

He did not hurry.

He stood under the porch light.

May you like

Then he looked directly at the hidden-room window.

And smiled.
