MY DAUGHTER HANDED ME A SECRET NOTE BEFORE MY WEDDING—THEN I READ WHAT MY BRIDE HAD WRITTEN ABOUT HER
MY DAUGHTER HANDED ME A CRUMPLED NOTE BEFORE I SAID “I DO” — WHAT MY BRIDE HAD WRITTEN ENDED THE WEDDING
Ten minutes before my wedding, I found my seven-year-old daughter crying behind the chapel.
Emily’s white dress was wrinkled. The flowers in her hair were falling apart. Her hands were shaking.
I knelt beside her.
“What happened?”
She shoved a crumpled note into my hand.
Then she whispered:
“Rebecca said that after you say ‘I do,’ I have to leave forever.”
My blood went cold.
Rebecca was the woman I was about to marry.
For two years, she had acted like she loved Emily. She helped her with homework, joined family dinners, and promised she would never try to replace Emily’s mother.
Then I read the note.
After the wedding, you will live somewhere better suited for children like you. Don’t upset your father. He has already agreed.
I stared at the words.
Emily’s voice trembled.
“Did you agree, Daddy?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
I folded the note and slipped it into my jacket.
Then the chapel doors opened.
Rebecca appeared in her lace wedding gown as nearly two hundred guests turned toward her.
She smiled.
“Darling,” she said sweetly, “the priest is waiting. Give Emily to the nanny.”
Emily clung to my collar.
I didn’t move.
Rebecca’s smile stayed frozen.
Then her eyes dropped to my jacket.
She knew.

She knew I had the note.
And for the first time that day, the woman I was about to marry looked terrified.
