Chapter 11 - Locker 17The train station was nearly empty.

It was 11:48 p.m.
Rebecca and I arrived with the investigators ten minutes behind us.
Locker 17 sat along the far wall.
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a black metal case.
No documents.
No money.
No hard drives.
Only a VHS tape.
And a letter.
Rebecca stared at it.
“Dad owned a VCR.”
“He also owned an entire civilization of outdated electronics.”
She almost smiled.
Then stopped.
The letter was addressed to me.
Margaret,
If you've reached Locker 17, then the people I feared have already taken control of your finances.
The archive is not evidence of one crime.
It is evidence of years.
Years of money moved through Bellwood.
Years of people protected.
Years of debts hidden.
And one final transaction that I could not stop.
I swallowed.
Rebecca continued reading.
The final transaction concerned your house.
Bellwood intended to acquire the mineral rights through a shell company.
Daniel believed he was saving himself.
Melissa believed she was saving Daniel.
They were both wrong.
The person behind the scheme was not either of them.
Rebecca stopped.
“What?”
I stared.
The final name will explain why I kept silent.
Rebecca read the line.
Stephen Ward.
I felt dizzy.
“The lawyer?”
Rebecca nodded.
“The lawyer helped organize the fraud.”
The investigators immediately called for records.
But the letter wasn't finished.
I made one terrible mistake.
I trusted Stephen after I stopped trusting Daniel.
He advised me to create the trust.
He knew where the money was.
He knew where the documents were.
And he knew how vulnerable Margaret would be after my death.
Rebecca's breathing changed.
“Mom.”
I looked at her.
“Dad knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew Stephen was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“And still used him to protect the assets.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The answer was on the next line.
Because I believed he was afraid of Bellwood.
I was wrong.
He was Bellwood.
Rebecca closed the letter.
The investigators looked at each other.
Then one of them said:
“We need the video.”
We took the VHS tape to a nearby evidence lab.
It took an hour to digitize.
At 1:37 a.m., the video began.
Frank sat at his desk.
He looked tired.
Older than I remembered.
Across from him sat Stephen Ward.
And Daniel.
Frank said:
“I am done protecting you.”
Daniel looked down.
Stephen smiled.
“You can't protect her forever.”
Frank's voice hardened.
“I don't need to.”
Stephen leaned back.
“Where did you put the documents?”
Frank said nothing.
Stephen glanced at Daniel.
“Your son knows what happens when debts go unpaid.”
Daniel looked terrified.
Frank suddenly slammed his hand onto the desk.
“You will not touch Margaret.”
Stephen smiled.
“Then she will have to learn the truth.”
“What truth?”
“About Claire.”
I covered my mouth.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
Frank went silent.
Stephen continued.
“The family you've built isn't the family you think it is.”
The screen froze.
Then resumed.
Frank stood.
“Get out.”
Stephen laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
Stephen leaned forward.
“Claire isn't your only secret.”
The recording ended.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Mom.”
“I don't know.”
“I believe you.”
Then the investigator's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What happened?” Rebecca asked.
He lowered the phone.
“Daniel was found.”
“Where?”
He looked at me.
“At Frank's old workshop.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
Relief hit me for half a second.
Then the investigator continued.
“He's injured.”
“How badly?”
“He's conscious.”
“Then let's go.”
The investigator hesitated.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Daniel wasn't alone.”
I froze.
“Who was with him?”
The investigator looked at Rebecca.
“A woman.”
“Melissa?”
“No.”
“Claire?”
“No.”
He paused.

Then said:
“The woman from the photograph.”
