Chapter 11 - The next morning, Detective Hayes found a bullet lodged in the wall. There was no attempt to enter the building.

No second shooter.

No vehicle description.

But taped to the broken window was a photograph.

It showed Emma.

Walking home from school.

Taken three weeks before her birthday.

On the back was one sentence.

SHE WAS CHOSEN LONG AGO.

I couldn't breathe.

“Chosen for what?”

Detective Hayes had no answer.

We went back through my father's records.

The trust.

The insurance.

The hospital.

Every document pointed to one person.

Eleanor Price.

But Eleanor was missing.

Her house was empty.

Her office had been cleared.

Her phone was disconnected.

Malcolm had disappeared too.

Only Daniel remained.

And Daniel had one final piece of information.

He agreed to meet us at an abandoned warehouse.

“I need you to understand something,” he said.

“Your husband wasn't stealing medicine for profit.”

“Then why?”

“Because someone forced him to.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked around.

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father was dead.”

“Before he died, he knew he was being targeted.”

Daniel explained that my father had recruited Mark to secretly remove sedatives from hospital inventory.

The drugs were intended to expose the fraud operation.

Mark was supposed to track who collected them.

But Mark became greedy.

He started selling small quantities to pay gambling debts.

That was where everything changed.

The operation no longer had a single villain.

It had several people betraying each other.

Mark sold sedatives.

Eleanor falsified medical records.

Malcolm financed the operation.

Rachel moved money.

Daniel discovered too much.

And my father had tried to stop all of them.

But there was still one missing piece.

Why Emma?

Daniel pulled out a file.

Inside was an old photograph.

My father stood beside a little girl.

Emma.

Except Emma was three years old in the photograph.

My father had taken it during a trip I didn't know about.

Behind them stood a woman.

Eleanor.

I stared.

“That isn't possible.”

Daniel pointed at the back.

A date.

Four years ago.

The same year my father died.

Then he showed me a medical report.

Emma had been tested for a rare genetic condition.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?”

“Because your father wasn't Emma's biological grandfather.”

My mind went blank.

“What?”

He continued.

“Your father suspected Mark was not Emma's father.”

I turned toward the warehouse door.

Mark was standing there.

He had followed us.

He looked exhausted.

“Tell her.”

I faced him.

“Tell me what?”

Mark stared at Emma's photograph.

Then he said:

“Emma is my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“But that's not the secret.”

I waited.

Mark swallowed.

“Your father wasn't studying her because he thought she was mine.”

“Then why?”

“Because he discovered Emma's blood could prove who was responsible for his death.”

I didn't understand.

Daniel spoke.

“Your father had preserved a biological sample.”

“From Emma?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To compare it against evidence from the night he died.”

I felt dizzy.

“What evidence?”

Mark looked at me.

“Your father's blood.”

I whispered:

“You're saying my father was poisoned.”

Mark nodded.

“And Emma's sample could identify the substance.”

“Why would she have anything to do with it?”

“Because the poison was introduced through a medication.”

The same hospital.

The same people.

The same records.

Everything circled back.

Then Mark took out his phone.

He showed me a photograph.

A laboratory report.

The substance had been identified.

It was not the sedative used on Emma.

It was something rarer.

Something only one person in Baltimore had ordered that year.

Eleanor Price.

I thought the mystery was finally solved.

Then the report showed a second name.

The person who had signed for the shipment.

May you like

My sister.

Rachel.
