Chapter 15: The Birthday Secret

“Daddy swallowed it.”
Nobody spoke.
For three seconds, the room seemed frozen.
Then Mark looked directly into the camera.
“Emma…”
His voice broke.
“Don't.”
My hands were shaking.
“What did she mean?”
Mark closed his eyes.
I could see the fear on his face.
Not fear of my father.
Not fear of the police.
Fear of me.
“Mark.”
He finally looked at me.
“I didn't swallow anything.”
“Then why did Emma say that?”
“Because she saw me hide it.”
“Where?”
He hesitated.
My father stepped closer to the camera.
“Sarah, listen to me.”
“No.”
“Your husband is lying.”
I turned toward the screen.
“Then you tell me the truth.”
My father stared at me.
“The key is inside Mark.”
I felt sick.
“Inside him?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“He swallowed a capsule.”
Mark shook his head.
“Dad, stop.”
My father continued.
“It isn't dangerous.”
“Then why?”
“Because it can't be found by a search.”
I stared at Mark.
“You swallowed it?”
He looked away.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
Three days.
The day before Emma's birthday.
The day everything began.
“You knew they were coming.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Emma was going to be targeted.”
“Yes.”
“And you swallowed the key to keep it from them.”
“Yes.”
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if they knew you understood, they would have killed you.”
My father interrupted.
“They would have killed Emma first.”
Mark glared at him.
“That's why I did it.”
I looked between them.
“What exactly is the key?”
My father answered.
“The key opens the original Project Echo database.”
“And what's inside?”
“Names.”
“Just names?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Evidence.”
My heart sank.
“Evidence of what?”
“Everything.”
He looked at me.
“Every experiment.”
“Every payment.”
“Every disappearance.”
“Every murder.”
“And every person who helped them.”
I suddenly understood.
The Black Ledger had never been about money.
It was a record of an entire hidden operation.
And Emma's blood was the biological key.
The screen flickered.
Emma appeared again.
“Mommy?”
“I'm here.”
“I'm scared.”
I nearly broke.
“I know, sweetheart.”
“Daddy said you would come.”
“I will.”
Mark leaned toward her.
“Emma, listen to me.”
She nodded.
“Don't tell them where the key is.”
“But Mommy already knows.”
Mark smiled weakly.
“That's okay.”
My father suddenly looked toward someone off camera.
“Enough.”
A man grabbed Emma's shoulder.
She cried out.
“Let her go!”
My father turned back.
“Bring Rebecca.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“No.”
“Then Emma dies.”
I stared at Rachel.
She was crying.
“Sarah…”
“What?”
“I know where they are.”
My heart stopped.
“You do?”
Rachel nodded.
“The old Echo facility.”
“Where?”
“Under the hospital.”
I stared.
“The hospital?”
“Yes.”
“The hospital where Emma was admitted?”
Rachel nodded.
“The original laboratory was built beneath it.”
Everything clicked.
The hospital.
The sedative.
The missing records.
The fake credentials.
They had never taken Emma far.
They had taken her downstairs.
Into the place where the entire nightmare had begun.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“Can you get us in?”
He nodded.
“I can.”
My mother stepped forward.
“No.”
I turned.
“You're coming.”
She shook her head.
“If I go, they'll know the marker is active.”
“They already know.”
She looked at me.
“Then you don't understand.”
“What?”
She whispered:
“The facility isn't controlled by my father.”
“Who controls it?”
My mother looked at the screen.
“The person who created Project Echo.”
I stared.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Mark.”
I turned.
My husband looked at me.
“No.”
My mother nodded.
“Mark's father.”
I froze.
“My father-in-law?”
“He created the program.”
Mark looked devastated.
“I found out years later.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you still married me?”
“I didn't know who you were at first.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?”
Mark looked directly into my eyes.
“I was assigned to watch your family.”
The words landed like a knife.
I couldn't breathe.
“You were assigned?”
“Yes.”
“To spy on me?”
“Yes.”
“Then when did you stop?”
“When I fell in love with you.”
I shook my head.
“And Emma?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Emma was the reason I finally betrayed them.”
Police sirens filled the hospital entrance.
Detective Harris led the team through a restricted corridor.
The elevator descended.
Past the basement.
Past the parking levels.
Past floors that weren't listed on any map.
Finally, the doors opened.
A long white corridor stretched ahead.
Old.
Abandoned.
But the lights were still working.
Rachel walked beside me.
My mother stayed behind with the officers.
Mark followed.
His shoulder was still bleeding.
“You shouldn't be here,” I whispered.
“I know.”
“Then why did you come?”
“Because Emma is my daughter.”
We reached a steel door.
Rachel entered a code.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a laboratory.
Rows of empty glass chambers.
Medical equipment.
Old computers.
Photographs.
And at the center of the room stood my father.
Emma was beside him.
Alive.
I nearly collapsed with relief.
“Emma!”
She ran toward me.
I caught her and held her tightly.
“I've got you.”
She buried her face against me.
“I knew you'd come.”
“I promised.”
My father didn't move.
Behind him stood Elise.
The woman I had believed was my sister.
She held a gun.
“Put the girl down.”
I froze.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Elise.”
Elise smiled.
“Hello, little sister.”
Rachel's face hardened.
“You're finished.”
“No.”
Elise looked toward Mark.
“He is.”
Mark stepped between us.
Elise raised the gun.
“Move.”
“No.”
“You know what happens next.”
Mark shook his head.
“Not this time.”
He reached into his pocket.
Then threw something onto the floor.
A tiny black device.
My father stared.
“What did you do?”
Mark smiled.
“Everything you taught me.”
The laboratory doors slammed shut.
The computers flickered.
Then every monitor came alive.
Thousands of files began uploading.
Names.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Medical records.
Video evidence.
The entire Project Echo archive.
My father stared at the screens.
“You can't.”
“I already did.”
Detective Harris looked at his phone.
“It's going public.”
My father lunged toward Mark.
Police officers tackled him.
Elise tried to run.
Rachel stopped her.
For the first time, my real sister stood between me and the woman who had stolen her life.
“You took everything from me.”
Elise stared at her.
“I became you.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You never became my sister.”
Police officers arrested Elise.
The room fell silent.
Then Emma tugged my sleeve.
“Mommy?”
I knelt.
“What?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Was my birthday really ruined?”
I looked at the balloons still hanging in the hospital corridor above us.
Then I smiled through my tears.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you're still here.”
Emma hugged me.
Behind us, Mark lowered his head.
My father was taken away.
Elise was handcuffed.
The files were spreading across the world.
For the first time in twenty-six years, the secrets were no longer hidden.
But there was one final question.
I turned to Mark.
“Why did you put the sedative in Emma's cup?”
He stared at me.
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
Mark looked toward the evidence table.
The original unicorn cup was sitting there.
Beside it was the laboratory report.
He picked it up.
His face slowly changed.
“Sarah…”
“What?”
He handed me the report.
The sedative wasn't the only substance found in Emma's drink.
There was another compound.
One the doctors hadn't identified.
One connected to Project Echo.
I read the final line.
GENETIC ACTIVATOR DETECTED.
I looked at Mark.
“What does that mean?”
He whispered:
“It means the person who poisoned Emma wasn't trying to kill her.”
“Then what were they trying to do?”
Mark looked toward my daughter.
“They were trying to activate something inside her.”
Emma suddenly touched her chest.
“Mommy?”
Her eyes widened.
“I can hear someone.”
I froze.
“Who?”
She looked toward the dark laboratory.
Then whispered:
“Grandma.”
My mother stepped forward.
Her face went white.
“I don't hear anything.”
Emma shook her head.
“She says…”
“What?”
Emma looked directly at me.
“She says this wasn't the end.”

And somewhere deep beneath the hospital, an old computer suddenly powered itself on.
PROJECT ECHO: SUBJECT 002 ACTIVATED.
