Chapter 10 - Nobody moved.Not me.

Not Maya.
Not even the detective.
The man standing in my garage looked like my husband.
The same face.
The same eyes.
The same voice.
But I knew one thing with absolute certainty.
My husband was dead.
I had watched his coffin being lowered into the ground.
I had received his death certificate.
I had identified his body.
Yet here he stood.
Alive.
“You died,” I whispered.
His expression changed.
“I had to.”
Maya stepped forward.
“Dad?”
He looked at her.
For the first time, his eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted you to know me this way.”
“Why did you leave us?”
“Because they were watching.”
“Who?”
“The Keeper.”
“You're the Keeper?”
Robert shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
He looked toward the shattered garage door.
“Someone who has been closer to you than you realize.”
The detective raised his weapon.
“Robert Carter, you're under arrest.”
Robert laughed quietly.
“You still think this is about me.”
“Where is Sophie?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
Robert looked at Maya.
“She knows.”
Maya's face changed.
“What?”
“You're carrying the answer.”
“I don't understand.”
“You were carrying it the entire time.”
He reached into his jacket.
I thought he had a weapon.
Instead, he pulled out a small photograph.
It was the same photograph we'd found in Maya's locker.
But the back had changed.
The message was gone.
There was another sentence.
LOOK BEHIND THE MIRROR.
Maya suddenly understood.
“The old gym.”
Robert nodded.
We rushed there.
Behind the largest mirror was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small metal box.
Maya opened it.
Inside were dozens of documents.
But one envelope caught her attention.
Her name was written on it.
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten statement from Sophie.
It explained everything.
Sophie had discovered the school's hidden financial accounts.
She had also discovered that the money was being used to pay people who helped bury crimes committed by powerful families.
But Sophie had made a mistake.
She trusted the wrong person.
Principal Harris had discovered that she had evidence.
He took the files.
Coach Reed tried to protect her.
Emily had escaped the same system years earlier.
And Robert had been investigating it from the beginning.
The person called the Keeper was not one individual.
It was a network.
People who collected secrets.
People who controlled evidence.
People who protected one another.
And one person sat at the center of it all.
The superintendent.
The same man we'd seen in the videos.
The man who had been smiling during every school assembly.
The man who had spoken at Emily's disappearance ceremony.
The man who had publicly promised to protect the students.
I read the final page.
My hands began shaking.
There was one final name.
THE KEEPER: THOMAS BENNETT.
Rebecca stared at the page.
Her face collapsed.
“No.”
Maya looked at her.
“What?”
Rebecca whispered:
“He's my brother.”
The detective immediately called for backup.
But before the police arrived, the lights inside the old gym turned on.
Every screen came alive.
Thomas Bennett appeared.
Smiling.
“Congratulations,” he said.
Maya stared at him.
“Where is Sophie?”
“Behind you.”
We turned.
Sophie stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Maya ran to her.
They embraced.
I cried.
For the first time in weeks, my daughter looked sixteen again.
But the relief lasted only seconds.
Thomas's voice came through the speakers.
“You think you won.”
He laughed.
“You haven't even discovered the last secret.”
The screen changed.
A hospital record appeared.
Maya's birth certificate.
Then another document.
Then a photograph.
The picture showed Robert holding baby Maya.
But he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood Thomas Bennett.
I stared at the image.
Robert's face went pale.
Maya looked at him.
“What is that?”
Robert couldn't answer.
Thomas spoke again.
“Ask your father who really chose you.”
Maya turned toward Robert.
“Dad?”
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I didn't choose you.”
Maya's face crumpled.
“Then who did?”
Robert looked at me.
Then at Rebecca.
And finally at Maya.
“The day you were born,” he said, “your biological parents weren't the only people making decisions.”
“Who was?”
Robert swallowed.
“The person who ordered your adoption...”
He stopped.
Maya stepped closer.
“Who?”
Robert looked directly into his daughter's eyes.
Then said:
“Your mother.”
I felt the world disappear.
Maya turned toward me.
“Mom?”
I couldn't speak.
Because for the first time in sixteen years...
I remembered.
I remembered the hospital.
The empty crib.
The document I had signed.
The woman who had placed a baby in my arms.
And the promise I had made never to tell my daughter the truth.
The speakers crackled.
Thomas laughed.
“Now,” he said, “we can finally begin.”
And every screen in the gym went black.
May you like
Then one final message appeared.
CHAPTER TWO BEGINS WITH THE WOMAN WHO FORGOT SHE WAS A MOTHER.
