Chapter 13 - The Final AccountAnton did not run.

He simply walked into the church as if he owned it.

Marcus's agents surrounded him.

Weapons raised.

Anton smiled.

“You still believe weapons determine power.”

Marcus said,

“Hands where we can see them.”

Anton complied.

He looked at me.

“You resemble your brother.”

“You killed him.”

“No.”

Anton shook his head.

“Your brother died because he refused an offer.”

“What offer?”

“To join me.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“You don't need to believe me.”

He looked toward the archive.

“You need to read the entire file.”

Marcus ordered agents to take him away.

Anton stopped.

“One thing before I go.”

He looked directly at me.

“The Vances were never in control.”

“I know.”

“Halbrook wasn't.”

“I know.”

“Victor wasn't.”

I stepped closer.

“Then who was?”

Anton smiled.

“You.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Your brother spent years moving assets into your trust.”

“Without my knowledge.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To create a legal shield.”

Anton lowered his voice.

“Everything I couldn't steal from Blackwater was eventually placed under your name.”

I looked toward the archive.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if you understand the original plan.”

He leaned forward.

“You were supposed to become the owner.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

The word echoed through the church.

Anton's expression hardened.

“Victor feared you.”

“Daniel mocked me.”

“Because Daniel knew only what he was told.”

“Then why attack Lily?”

“To force you into the open.”

I stared at him.

Anton continued.

“When they discovered the trust had been activated, they knew you were the only person capable of destroying the network.”

“So Daniel tried to kill my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“He almost succeeded.”

Anton looked away.

“That was unnecessary.”

I wanted to hit him.

Marcus stopped me.

“Not here.”

Anton smiled.

“You finally understand.”

“What?”

“Legal destruction requires patience.”

He was right.

Not morally.

Not emotionally.

But practically.

Every account.

Every company.

Every name.

Every transaction.

We had to make it impossible for the Vances to escape through another shell.

For six weeks, investigators worked.

The blue ledger became evidence.

The black ledger became evidence.

The Blackwater archive became evidence.

Bank records were seized.

Corporate directors testified.

Several officials resigned after being implicated.

Victor Vance was arrested overseas months later after an international warrant.

Anton Vale faced charges in multiple jurisdictions.

Daniel remained in custody.

But the final piece was still missing.

The fourteen children.

We found twelve.

Two were missing.

Noah knew one of them.

A girl named Emma.

“Where did you see her?”

“In the white house.”

“What white house?”

He drew a picture.

A remote mansion surrounded by trees.

Marcus recognized the location.

“That's one of Victor's old properties.”

We went there with a warrant.

The house was empty.

Except for a locked basement.

Inside were two rooms.

One was empty.

The second contained a mattress.

Food.

Water.

A small child's sweater.

And a camera.

The recording showed Emma entering the room.

She was being moved.

The timestamp was three days old.

Marcus looked at me.

“Someone came after the arrests.”

“Who?”

We found a second camera.

This one pointed toward the front gate.

The last person to enter the property was Marissa Vance.

I stared at the screen.

“She moved the children.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He rewound.

Marissa entered alone.

Ten minutes later, another vehicle arrived.

The driver stepped out.

I recognized him.

Halbrook.

He was still alive.

Still free.

And the vehicle was heading toward a private airport.

Marcus grabbed the radio.

“Lock every exit.”

I looked at the screen.

Halbrook opened the trunk.

Inside was a child's suitcase.

And beside it, a folder.
