Chapter 9 - The First NameThe bunker shook.

Somebody had triggered the emergency locks.
Dylan ran to the door.
“It's reinforced.”
“Then find another exit.”
“There isn't one.”
Rachel searched the wall panels.
I stared at the countdown.
08:41.
If Blackline released everything, my name would be the first to appear.
Which meant whoever built it expected me to be blamed.
I opened the system administrator panel.
There were three access identities.
Victor.
Elias.
Daniel.
I selected mine.
The system rejected the command.
IDENTITY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.
A question appeared.
What did your mother call you when nobody else was listening?
I froze.
Dylan looked confused.
I wasn't.
A memory surfaced.
My mother sitting on the edge of my childhood bed.
She used to call me “Danny-Boy.”
I entered it.
Access granted.
The system displayed the hidden architecture of Blackline.
It wasn't just a data vault.
It was a dead-man switch.
Once activated, it would distribute evidence to regulators, journalists, law enforcement, and every board member at Halcyon.
But why was my name first?
I opened the release template.
The first statement was already written.
Daniel Carter has been identified as the architect of the financial fraud operation known as Blackline.
I felt sick.
Someone had created a confession in my name.
Rachel stared.
“Can you delete it?”
“No.”
“Can you stop the release?”
I looked at the system.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Someone needs to authenticate as Daniel.”
“I am Daniel.”
“No.”
I pointed to the screen.
“This system expects me to deny responsibility.”
The instruction was buried beneath layers of code.
To stop the release, I needed to prove Blackline had been hijacked.
The timer dropped below five minutes.
Dylan suddenly said:
“Dad.”
“What?”
“He would have known the authentication protocol.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“Dad taught me how the old system worked.”
Dylan knelt beside the server.
“He told me every executive had a recovery question.”
“What was yours?”
“Childhood pet.”
I entered mine.
Wrong.
Dylan tried his.
Wrong.
Rachel's.
Wrong.
Then I realized.
The question wasn't asking for my real childhood pet.
It was asking for a pet connected to a memory only Victor knew.
A dog.
The dog I had when I was six.
His name was Hunter.
I entered it.
Access denied.
Dylan stared at me.
“What did you have before Hunter?”
I shook my head.
“I don't remember.”
He looked at me.
“You did.”
I closed my eyes.
A flash.
A small white dog.
A red collar.
A name.
Buddy.
I entered it.
Access granted.
The screen changed.
WELCOME, PRIMARY SUBJECT.
Rachel whispered:
“What is a primary subject?”
I didn't answer.
Because I was staring at a hidden folder.
Inside it was a video.
I opened it.
Victor appeared on screen.
He was younger.
Maybe twelve years ago.
He sat in an office with Elias.
Victor said:
“If he reaches the board, he becomes a problem.”
Elias replied:
“He's your son.”
Victor laughed.
“Not mine.”
Then Elias asked:
“What will you do?”
Victor answered:
“I'll make him believe he's building the company.”
The video ended.
I felt something break inside me.
My career hadn't been mine.
It had been engineered.
Every promotion.
Every challenge.
Every failure.
Every opportunity.
A path designed to place me exactly where they needed me.
And then Dylan spoke.
“There’s another video.”
“What?”
He pointed.
“Behind it.”
I opened the file.
My mother appeared.
She was crying.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you're watching this, then Victor has already tried to erase your memory.”
I stopped breathing.
“My son, you need to know the truth.”
She leaned closer.
“Dylan is not the one who betrayed you.”
The timer hit 00:59.
My mother's voice continued.
“Your brother was ordered to attack you.”
Dylan closed his eyes.
“But he wasn't supposed to hurt you.”
The timer hit 00:30.
I looked at Dylan.
He was crying.
Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.
“Dylan was supposed to wake you up.”
The screen went black.
A second later:
00:10.
The bunker door suddenly unlocked.
We ran.

Behind us, the system counted down.
And at zero, every file in Blackline began transmitting.
