Chapter 11 - Mom’s Last SecretWe returned to Mom's house with a warrant.

The entire property had been searched before.

But this time, Daniel focused on the original foundation plans.

Twenty-eight years old.

The basement was different from what the renovations suggested.

A narrow cavity ran beneath the eastern wall.

We opened it.

Inside was a sealed metal tube.

Daniel pulled it out.

My hands trembled.

“This is it.”

The tube was engraved:

H.R. 1987

Marcus stared.

“The original ledger.”

But the tube was empty.

Inside was only one sheet.

A map.

Not of the house.

Of the city.

One location was circled.

An old cemetery.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom left us another breadcrumb.”

We drove there.

The cemetery was nearly empty.

At the back stood a mausoleum.

The inscription read:

Richard Vale.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“I've never seen this.”

The grave was supposed to belong to his father.

But the date was wrong.

Richard Vale supposedly died in 2001.

Yet the stone had been installed only five years ago.

Marcus opened the crypt.

Inside was no body.

Only a metal box.

The ledger.

And photographs.

Hundreds.

Victims.

Meetings.

Payments.

And one photograph that made everyone stop.

It showed David Voss.

Peter Lang.

Robert Sloan.

Richard Vale.

Evan.

And...

Mom.

Standing together.

Twenty-eight years ago.

I stared.

“Mom knew them?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Then Daniel saw the date.

The photo was taken one week before Mom bought the house.

My brain couldn't process it.

She had told us she met no one.

She had lied.

But why?

Daniel found a letter behind the ledger.

Mom's handwriting.

I knew what they were doing.

I pretended I didn't.

I stayed close because leaving would have exposed my children.

I looked at Daniel.

“She protected us.”

The next page explained everything.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Mom had accidentally discovered that Hollow Ridge was laundering money through properties.

She was offered money to stay quiet.

She refused.

Instead, she bought the house through an arrangement that gave her control of the original asset.

She became their problem.

For twenty-eight years.

Then she had children.

And the threat became more complicated.

She wrote:

The day Evan was born, they came back.

My heart broke.

“He was recruited as a child.”

Marcus nodded.

The ledger showed payments to a trust linked to Evan's education.

College.

First apartment.

First business.

Even his wedding.

Hollow Ridge had financed him.

He belonged to them before he knew it.

I kept reading.

Then I reached the final page.

I fear they will eventually use him against you.

There was another paragraph.

But Evan is not the one you should fear most.

Underneath:

The person who controls Hollow Ridge is someone you have trusted all your life.

My stomach turned.

Daniel looked at the photographs.

“We need to identify who.”

Then he went completely still.

One photograph had been circled.

It showed Mom standing beside a younger man.

A man I recognized immediately.

My father.

Except...

He had died twelve years earlier.

Daniel looked at me.

“Did your father ever talk about David Voss?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Did he ever mention Hollow Ridge?”

“No.”

Marcus pointed at the photo.

“Then why is he here?”

Behind the photograph was a handwritten note.

He helped me hide the ledger.

I felt numb.

My father hadn't been an innocent bystander.

He had been part of the effort to stop Hollow Ridge.

And perhaps that was why he died.

Then we heard footsteps outside the mausoleum.

Marcus raised his gun.

A voice spoke from the darkness.

“Don't shoot.”

We stepped outside.

It was Claire.

Alive.

Bruised.

Terrified.

May you like

She looked at me.

“I know who ordered the stroke.”
