Chapter 9 - The Girl in the BloodlineThe darkness lasted six seconds.

When the lights returned, Claire was gone.
Marcus had disappeared too.
Ethan turned toward the stairs.
Natalie grabbed him.
“Wait.”
“Sophie!”
“She isn't here.”
“That's exactly what you want me to believe.”
Natalie shook her head.
“She is the reason everyone is afraid.”
Ethan stared.
“My daughter?”
Natalie pointed to the wall.
Among the photographs was a document.
A birth certificate.
Not Sophie’s.
Claire’s.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
CHILD OF THE VALE BLOODLINE.
Ethan couldn't understand.
“What is this?”
Natalie whispered:
“Claire was Daniel Vale's daughter.”
Silence.
Ethan looked at her.
“That’s impossible.”
“She was raised under another name.”
“Why?”
“To escape her family.”
Ethan remembered Claire’s strange fear whenever anyone mentioned the Vales.
He remembered how she refused to attend certain charity events.
How she became anxious whenever Daniel Vale entered a room.
Now everything clicked.
Claire wasn't connected to the Vales by marriage.
She was connected by blood.
And Sophie had inherited that blood.
Ethan looked at Natalie.
“What does Sophie have?”
“The ability to access the trust.”
“What trust?”
“The Vale inheritance.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“A fortune?”
“Not just money.”
Natalie handed him a document.
At the top was a legal phrase:
THE BLUE TRUST.
Inside were assets worth billions.
But the document contained a condition.
The trust could only be accessed by Claire's direct descendant.
Sophie.
Ethan finally understood.
Everyone had been fighting over the music box because it contained the key.
Not a metaphorical key.
A literal one.
The blue key unlocked the trust.
And the trust contained evidence of every crime the Vale family had committed.
Ethan sat down.
“Why would Claire hide all of this from me?”
“Because she thought you were compromised.”
“My lawyer?”
Natalie nodded.
“And your father.”
Ethan looked up.
“What?”
“Your father helped establish the trust.”
Ethan's face went pale.
Suddenly his entire family history seemed like a carefully constructed lie.
Then his phone rang.
Mrs. Dalton.
Ethan answered immediately.
“Where is Sophie?”
There was silence.
Then a frightened voice.
“She’s gone.”
Ethan stood.
“What happened?”
“The cameras went out.”
“Who took her?”
“I don't know.”
Then another voice came through the phone.
A child's voice.
“Daddy?”
Ethan froze.
“Sophie?”
“Daddy, don't come.”
“Sophie!”
“Mommy said they're lying.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“Where are you?”
A whisper.
“I’m at the place where Mommy died.”
The call ended.
Ethan looked at Natalie.
“What place?”
Natalie stared at him.
“The crash site.”
Ethan grabbed his coat.
They drove through the night.
When they arrived, the road was empty.
No Sophie.
No kidnappers.
Only the old wreckage site.
Ethan searched desperately.
Then he saw a tiny blue object lying in the grass.
The music box.
Open.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire holding baby Sophie.
On the back:
THE LAST SECRET IS UNDER THE HOUSE.
Ethan looked toward his childhood home.
May you like
A place he hadn't visited in eleven years.
And suddenly the answer was waiting where his story had begun.
