Chapter 14 - The room erupted.Julian fired.

Vaughn disappeared behind the doorway.

The armed men returned fire.

Marcus dragged Harris behind the medical bed.

Laura shouted commands.

Daniel suddenly appeared from the corridor, wounded but alive.

Marcus stared.

"Daniel?"

Daniel smiled.

"Miss me?"

Marcus laughed despite himself.

Daniel shot two guards.

The others retreated.

For several seconds, the bunker became chaos.

Then silence.

Vaughn was gone.

Laura closed the door.

"We have maybe ten minutes."

"Until what?"

"He triggers the purge."

Marcus stared.

"What purge?"

"The entire building."

Harris struggled to breathe.

"He'll destroy the servers."

Marcus looked at him.

"That's good."

Harris shook his head.

"No."

"The ledger."

"If the servers are destroyed, the neural backups activate."

Marcus understood.

"Every copy."

Harris nodded.

"Every person connected to Project Mirror will receive the archive."

Laura looked at Marcus.

"You."

Marcus felt the voice return.

LET ME OUT.

He closed his eyes.

The others stared.

Then Marcus opened them.

"I can hear them."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

"All of them."

He suddenly saw everything.

A soldier dying in a desert.

A woman giving birth.

A CEO signing a contract.

A child crying in a laboratory.

Harris being tortured.

Laura dying.

Daniel being shot.

Julian standing beside a frozen lake.

Thousands of memories crashed through his mind.

Marcus screamed.

Then silence.

He opened his eyes.

Everyone stared.

Marcus spoke calmly.

"I know where Vaughn is."

Laura asked:

"How?"

"He never left the building."

Daniel frowned.

"We're in his network."

Marcus nodded.

"He moved through the memory system."

They rushed toward the main server chamber.

Marcus walked directly to the central console.

His fingers moved across the keyboard without hesitation.

Daniel stared.

"What are you doing?"

"Opening the ledger."

Laura grabbed his arm.

"You'll trigger the merge."

"I know."

Marcus entered a sequence.

The screen flashed:

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Then:

WELCOME, MARCUS REED.

Marcus stared.

Not Subject 09.

Not Subject 08.

Not a number.

His name.

He almost smiled.

Then another message appeared.

ORIGINAL MEMORY DETECTED.

Marcus froze.

Julian whispered:

"I told you."

Marcus looked at the screen.

A folder opened.

Inside was a single video.

He pressed play.

A younger Harris appeared.

He was speaking to the camera.

"If Marcus is watching this, then the transfer worked."

Marcus stared.

Harris continued:

"Thomas Harris did not create Project Mirror."

Marcus's eyes widened.

"The first experiment was funded by Marcus's father."

Then:

"But he didn't create the technology either."

The video changed.

An old photograph appeared.

A group of scientists.

At the center stood a woman Marcus had never seen before.

Harris spoke:

"Her name was Evelyn Reed."

Marcus stopped breathing.

His mother.

She was alive in the photograph.

And standing beside her was a much younger Richard Vaughn.

Harris continued:

"Evelyn was the true architect."

Marcus whispered:

"My mother."

Julian looked devastated.

Harris spoke again.

"She discovered that memories could be edited."

"Vaughn wanted to sell the technology."

"Evelyn refused."

"She hid the complete ledger."

"Inside her own son."

Marcus stared.

The room disappeared.

His mother had put the ledger inside him.

Not Vaughn.

Not Harris.

Her.

The machine activated around him.

The cables locked into place.

Laura stepped back.

"Marcus."

He looked at her.

"I'm ready."

The merge began.

Screens filled with memories.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Marcus screamed as every life entered him.

He saw his mother.

His father.

Julian.

Harris.

Laura.

Every copy.

Every betrayal.

Every lie.

Then one final memory appeared.

A woman standing in a laboratory.

Evelyn Reed.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Marcus."

He froze.

Her voice was soft.

"If you're seeing this, I'm probably dead."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I need you to remember one thing."

The screen flickered.

"You're not the copy."

Marcus stared.

"You're the one who survived."

The message ended.

The system displayed:

MERGE COMPLETE.

Every monitor went black.

Then one final line appeared.

PROJECT MIRROR TERMINATED.

Marcus opened his eyes.

The bunker was silent.

Daniel stared.

Laura stared.

Julian stared.

Marcus slowly stood.

Then he smiled.

Something was different.

He could hear every machine.

Every heartbeat.

Every voice.

Every memory.

Then the emergency door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Richard Vaughn.

He looked directly at Marcus.

And whispered:

"Impossible."

Marcus answered calmly.

"You forgot one thing."

Vaughn raised his weapon.

"What?"

Marcus looked at him.

May you like

"I remember everything."

The lights went out.
