Chapter 14 - THE LAST TRAPWe found Victor three days later.

Not at the airport.
Not in the city.
At my father's old cabin.
The place had been abandoned for years.
Police surrounded it before I arrived.
But Victor had already left.
Inside the cabin was a wall covered with photographs.
Me.
Lily.
Claire.
Anna.
My mother.
Martin.
Even Detective Reed.
Everyone he had manipulated was connected by red thread.
At the center was a photograph of my father.
Under it:
THE ONLY ONE WHO ESCAPED.
But my father hadn't escaped.
He had died.
Which meant Victor believed death itself had been part of the plan.
We searched every room.
Then Anna noticed the fireplace.
“There.”
A loose brick.
Behind it was another compartment.
Inside was a tape recorder.
My father's voice played when we pressed the button.
“Ethan, if this recording ever reaches you, then the network has survived me.”
I closed my eyes.
“I need you to understand something. Protecting your family is not about hiding the truth from them. It's about making sure the truth cannot be used against them.”
He paused.
“Victor will always create secrets.”
“Your job is to expose them.”
The recording ended.
Then another file began.
A live audio transmission.
Victor.
“Very touching.”
We looked around.
His voice continued.
“You've spent your entire life believing your father was the victim.”
“He wasn't.”
“He was the architect.”
My blood ran cold.
Victor claimed my father had once worked with him.
Not willingly.
But deeply enough to understand how the network operated.
“He built the trust.”
“He created the structure.”
“He knew exactly what I would become.”
I didn't know whether to believe him.
Neither did Reed.
Then Victor said:
“But there's one thing your father never knew.”
Silence.
“The trust contains a second beneficiary.”
I looked at Anna.
“Who?”
Victor answered.
“Me.”
The transmission cut.
The legal team worked through the night.
The claim was real enough to investigate.
A hidden clause existed.
But it didn't give Victor ownership.
It granted a dormant right under extraordinary circumstances.
And those circumstances had been fabricated.
That meant the entire scheme had been designed to trigger the clause.
Victor hadn't been trying to steal the company.
He had been trying to activate a dormant legal weapon buried in my father's estate.
We filed an emergency challenge.
The court froze the relevant assets.
Federal investigators followed the money.
The network began collapsing.
Shell companies disappeared.
Accounts were seized.
People started talking.
Victor was finally found two weeks later.
Not by chance.
A woman entered a police station and gave them his location.
My executive assistant.
She confessed she had been threatened.
But unlike Claire, she had secretly recorded every instruction.
Her evidence completed the chain.
Victor was arrested.
The case lasted months.
It became national news.
But inside our house, none of that mattered.
The day Lily came home for good, she placed her backpack by the door.
Then she turned.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can we paint my room?”
I smiled.
“What color?”
“Yellow.”
“Why yellow?”
“Because it looks like sunshine.”
I nodded.
“Yellow it is.”
She smiled.
Then she hesitated.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can I sleep with the door open?”
My chest tightened.
“Of course.”
She ran upstairs.
I stood alone in the hallway.
For the first time in months, the house was quiet.
But it wasn't the old kind of quiet.
This quiet felt safe.
Until my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
VICTOR CONFESSED TO EVERYTHING.
I exhaled.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
EXCEPT WHO ORDERED HIM TO START.
