Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENEDI moved first.

I grabbed Emily.

Thomas activated the timer.

Twenty seconds.

My father tackled Daniel.

Rebecca pulled the fire alarm.

Sprinklers exploded above us.

The wires sparked.

Everyone ran.

I carried Emily through the corridor.

Behind me, Thomas shouted.

“YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S IN THAT LEDGER!”

I yelled back:

“I DON'T CARE!”

He laughed.

“You should!”

We reached the chapel.

The bell tower stairs were locked.

Rebecca found the key.

We climbed.

Ten seconds.

I reached the top.

The bell hung above us.

I looked around.

Nothing.

Then Emily spoke.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

She pointed to a crack in the wood.

“Mommy showed me this.”

I pried it open.

Inside was a metal box.

The ledger.

I pulled it out.

Thomas appeared at the staircase.

Blood ran down his forehead.

He raised his weapon.

“Put it down.”

I held the ledger tighter.

“You won't get it.”

He smiled.

“You already lost.”

Behind him, my father appeared.

“Thomas.”

They stared at each other.

Two brothers.

Decades of betrayal between them.

Thomas shook his head.

“You ruined everything.”

My father answered:

“No.”

“I built the empire.”

“You built a prison.”

Thomas raised his weapon.

Before he could fire, Rebecca stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Your father would be proud.”

She shook.

“My father isn't my master.”

Then she threw the USB drive into the bell.

Thomas stared.

“What are you doing?”

“I made copies.”

His face changed.

“Where?”

Rebecca smiled through tears.

“Everywhere.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Thomas looked toward the window.

Police.

Federal agents.

More vehicles.

He realized it was over.

But then he grabbed Emily.

I lunged.

He fell backward.

We both crashed against the railing.

The bell swung violently above us.

Thomas slipped.

I grabbed his wrist.

For one second, I had his life in my hand.

He stared at me.

“Like your father.”

I looked at him.

“You're not my father.”

Then I pulled him up.

Not because he deserved mercy.

Because I refused to become him.

Federal agents stormed the tower.

Thomas was arrested.

Daniel surrendered.

Richard was taken into custody at the estate.

My mother gave a full statement.

Sarah finally walked outside into daylight without fear.

And Emily?

She never let go of my hand.

Weeks later, the truth became public.

The ledger exposed everything.

Thirty-two witnesses.

Millions hidden.

Years of corruption.

The Bennett family empire collapsed.

The trust was transferred into the independent foundation my grandfather had created.

Emily's future was protected.

But the wedding never happened.

The chapel remained empty.

The flowers wilted.

The cake was never cut.

And my vows were never spoken.

One month later, I returned to the chapel alone.

I stood beneath the bell.

Rebecca found me there.

She wore a simple black dress.

No wedding gown.

No flowers.

No lies.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

“I owe you one too.”

She looked confused.

“For what?”

“For believing you were the villain.”

She smiled sadly.

“You had reasons.”

We stood in silence.

Then she asked:

“Do you still hate me?”

I looked toward the doors.

Emily was outside with Sarah.

Laughing.

Alive.

Safe.

“No.”

Rebecca nodded.

Then she asked the question I didn't expect.

“Does that mean you still love me?”

I looked at her.

Before I could answer, Emily ran into the chapel.

“Daddy!”

She was holding something.

Another crumpled note.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?”

She gave it to me.

“This was in Mommy's old bag.”

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was Rebecca's.

But the message was only one sentence.

The man you arrested tonight was not the only one who knew about the ledger.

I looked up.

Rebecca's face had gone pale.

Sarah stood in the doorway.

May you like

And behind her…

someone was watching.
