Chapter 10 - The photograph changed everything.Until then, I had believed Sophie was at the center of the plan.

Now I wasn't sure.
The detective took me to the cemetery under police escort.
Mark was gone.
He had left only one thing behind.
A metal box.
Inside was a handwritten journal.
My father's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
I had seen it all my childhood.
The first page was dated nineteen years earlier.
The project begins.
The next page listed names.
Ethan Cole.
Mark Hale.
Rachel Cole.
And my father.
Then my name.
I couldn't turn the page.
Rachel stood beside me.
“What does it say?”
I read aloud.
“Subject M approved for integration.”
My voice broke.
“What's subject M?”
Rachel's face changed.
“You.”
I stared at her.
“No.”
“The project wasn't about Sophie.”
She pointed to my name.
“It started before you were born.”
The journal described a private program built around identity manipulation.
Children.
Guardians.
False records.
Controlled environments.
Not for money.
For something much harder to understand.
Leverage.
The people behind it collected information about families and created circumstances where one person could be controlled through another.
A child became leverage over a parent.
A parent became leverage over a business.
A marriage became leverage over an inheritance.
My father had been building networks.
Mark had been assigned to me.
The more I read, the harder it became to breathe.
My father had arranged our first meeting.
He had pushed Mark into my life.
He had encouraged the marriage.
And when Sophie was born, she became part of the plan.
But there was one missing page.
I turned the journal over.
A page had been torn out.
Officer Harris asked for the rest.
We searched the cemetery.
Nothing.
Then Rachel noticed the inside cover.
There was a tiny inscription.
Ask who paid for the first house.
My mind raced.
“Our house?”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“The house you grew up in.”
I remembered it.
A large white home in the suburbs.
My father had always told me he bought it after years of hard work.
But the journal suggested something else.
The police searched property records.
The house hadn't belonged to my father.
It had belonged to a corporation.
That corporation had belonged to the same organization that later employed Mark.
My childhood home had been a controlled location.
My childhood had been part of the experiment.
And suddenly the secret bath looked different.
Maybe Mark wasn't teaching Sophie to lie.
Maybe he was training her because someone had started the next phase.
That night, Sophie was moved again.
A protected location.
She had finally fallen asleep when a guard called me.
“Someone left something at the door.”
It was a small paper cup.
Exactly like the one from the bathroom.
There was a message written on the bottom.
THREE QUESTIONS.
Underneath:
WHO IS YOUR MOTHER?
WHO IS YOUR FATHER?
WHO ARE YOU?
I stared at the cup.
Then the guard found something else.
A tiny red mark had been drawn beneath the questions.
The same symbol from Rachel's letters.
The black circle.
I looked through the window.
Across the street, a man stood beneath a streetlamp.
He lifted his phone.
Then slowly raised one finger to his lips.
He was gone before the officers reached the door.

But Sophie woke up screaming.
“He found us.”
