Chapter 6 - Vanessa's Second PhoneThe photograph looked real.

Too real.

Claire was wearing the gray sweater she loved.

Emma was three.

Standing beside her.

Smiling.

Cole studied the pixels.

“Could be manipulated.”

“But the sweater…”

“Daniel.”

I looked at him.

“Grief makes people see patterns.”

“You think I'm imagining this?”

“No.”

He lowered his voice.

“I think someone wants you to believe your wife is alive.”

“Why?”

“To make you open something.”

“The box.”

He nodded.

That was when an officer brought in Vanessa's abandoned handbag.

It had been found two streets away.

Inside were cosmetics.

Keys.

A wallet.

And a second phone.

The screen was locked.

Forensics bypassed it.

The message history was terrifying.

There were months of conversations with an unknown contact named:

M

M:

You have one job.

Vanessa:

I know.

M:

Get close to Daniel.

Vanessa:

What if he finds out?

M:

He won't.

Then:

M:

Move in.

M:

Gain access to Emma.

M:

Find the box.

Then:

M:

Do not let her talk to him alone.

I stared at the messages.

My hands tightened around the phone.

Vanessa had been sent to me.

The entire relationship had been engineered.

Cole kept scrolling.

Then he stopped.

A message from three months earlier.

M:

Claire did not die in the crash.

Vanessa:

Stop saying that.

M:

You know what happened.

Vanessa:

I know what you told me.

M:

Then remember this: Daniel cannot know she survived.

My heart pounded.

I sat down.

“If Claire survived…”

Cole interrupted.

“Don't jump ahead.”

“But the message…”

“Messages can lie.”

Another conversation appeared.

M:

Emma remembers the night.

Vanessa:

She was two.

M:

Children remember voices.

Vanessa:

She doesn't remember.

M:

Then make sure she never does.

I looked at the laundry room camera.

Vanessa had been following orders.

But that didn't explain everything.

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“Daniel.”

“Where are you?”

“I can't come back.”

“Did you date me because someone told you to?”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I never saw his face.”

“What about Noah?”

She began crying.

“They took him years ago.”

“Who?”

“Martin Crowe.”

“Martin Crowe is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then who took him?”

Vanessa whispered:

“His son.”

“What's his name?”

“I never learned it.”

Cole mouthed, “Ask about Claire.”

I did.

“Did Claire survive?”

Long silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“She survived the crash.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“What?”

“She was alive.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Vanessa!”

“She was taken.”

“By who?”

“The Quiet House.”

Cole leaned closer.

“What is the Quiet House?”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“They don't call it that anymore.”

“What do they call it?”

“The Observatory.”

I felt something cold in my chest.

“Where is it?”

“I don't know.”

“Then how do we find it?”

“Follow the cameras.”

“What?”

“They don't stay in one house.”

“What does that mean?”

“The cameras move.”

The call ended.

Cole looked at the second phone.

“That changes everything.”

“How?”

“Because this wasn't a surveillance operation centered on your house.”

He tapped one message.

“It was centered on Emma.”

Then another message appeared.

A new one.

From M.

STOP LOOKING.

The phone vibrated again.

Another message.

OR WE BRING CLAIRE HOME.

And attached was a live photograph.

Claire.

Standing somewhere dark.

Alive.

Older.

Terrified.

And someone was standing behind her.

A man whose face was hidden.

But his hand rested on Claire's shoulder.

On one finger was a silver ring.

Cole stared at it.

“I've seen that ring.”

“Where?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he called the station.

“Pull every officer photograph from the Harris case.”

Ten minutes later, a photo appeared.

A crime-scene investigator.

Silver ring.

Same design.

His name was Adrian Vale.

Cole stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because Adrian Vale was the detective assigned to Lily Harris's disappearance.”
