Chapter 14 - The Night We Came Home

The last enemy was waiting inside my own home
The bullet meant for me struck Margaret instead.
She fell against the table.
Victor disappeared into the corridor.
Marcus returned fire.
We ran.
Noah held Emily's hand.
Lena followed.
Daniel stayed behind.
I shouted his name.
He looked back.
"Go!"
We escaped through the rear garden.
By sunrise, police surrounded the estate.
Margaret survived.
Victor was gone.
Daniel surrendered.
And for the first time in ten years, I had no idea where the enemy was.
Then my phone rang.
A video.
Victor.
He stood inside my penthouse.
Our penthouse.
He had taken Claire's photograph from the mantel.
"Come home, Nathaniel."
I stared at the screen.
"You want me?"
"No."
He smiled.
"I want what you hid."
"I hid nothing."
"You did."
He held up the microfilm.
The original ledger.
The one from the piano.
I realized immediately.
The strip we found was a copy.
The real ledger was somewhere else.
And Victor knew it.
He turned the camera.
Behind him stood a woman.
Claire.
Alive.
Or someone who looked exactly like her.
I drove back to Manhattan.
Marcus tried to stop me.
I refused.
When I entered the penthouse, the lights were on.
The woman stood beside the fireplace.
She turned.
It was Claire.
Every piece of me broke at once.
She walked toward me.
"Nathaniel."
I couldn't move.
I wanted to believe.
I wanted to forget every lie.
But something felt wrong.
Claire had always touched my face with her right hand.
This woman used her left.
Tiny thing.
Almost nothing.
But I noticed.
I stepped back.
"Who are you?"
She froze.
Victor stepped from the hallway.
He applauded.
"Good."
The woman smiled.
"He's finally thinking."
I raised my gun.
"Camille."
She nodded.
Victor looked disappointed.
"You always were inconvenient."
"Where is my wife?"
"She died ten years ago."
My knees weakened.
"But I saw her."
"You saw what you needed to see."
Victor lifted the ledger.
"Now tell me where the original is."
"I don't know."
He laughed.
"You do."
He showed me a page.
On it was one final account number.
And beneath it, a beneficiary.
Emily Cross.
The entire fortune.
Not billions.
Far more.
A hidden trust worth eleven billion dollars.
Victor wanted access.
But he couldn't get it.
Because Emily was still alive.
And now, so was Noah.
The trust required both descendants to authorize the transfer.
That was why Victor needed them.
That was why he had spent ten years hiding Emily.
That was why he had kept Noah alive.
He did not need to kill them.
He needed their signatures.
I looked at Emily through the security monitor.
She and Noah were safe in the armored vehicle outside.
I smiled.
Victor frowned.
"What's funny?"
"You made one mistake."
"What?"
"You told me the truth."
He stared.
I pressed a button.
The entire penthouse lit up.
Cameras.
Microphones.
Every word Victor had spoken was being streamed to federal investigators, the board, and three major news networks.
Victor's face turned white.
"You wouldn't."
"I already did."
Sirens erupted below.
Agents stormed the building.
Victor raised his gun.
Camille screamed.
Then a shot cracked through the room.
Victor fell.
Silence.
I ran.
Not toward the cameras.
Not toward the money.
Toward Emily.
She opened the armored vehicle door.
I dropped to my knees.
She threw her arms around me.
And for the first time in ten years, I heard my daughter say the word I had imagined every night.
"Dad."
I held her so tightly she laughed through her tears.
Then she whispered,
"There's one thing Mom wanted you to know."
"What?"
Emily looked at me.
"She didn't die in the crash."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Emily reached into her coat.
She pulled out a final envelope.
It had my name on it.
May you like
The handwriting was Claire's.
But the date was tomorrow.
