Chapter 11 - “Mommy?”Lily backed away.

Natalie's arm shook.
She fought herself.
Every nerve screamed.
The pistol rose.
Ward crawled toward Natalie.
“Fight it!”
Natalie couldn't answer.
Her vision showed only the target.
Lily.
Seven years old.
Unarmed.
Her daughter.
The trigger command continued repeating.
TARGET ACQUIRED.
Natalie's finger moved toward the trigger.
Then Lily began singing.
A little lullaby.
The same one Natalie remembered from childhood.
Natalie's hand stopped.
Evelyn stared.
“No.”
Lily kept singing.
Natalie's eyes filled with tears.
The memories came rushing back.
Her mother singing.
Her father laughing.
Her daughter sleeping against her chest.
The lab.
The chair.
Night Glass.
Everything.
The conditioning was built around fear.
But Lily represented something the scientists had never understood.
Love.
Not weakness.
Not vulnerability.
A biological command stronger than theirs.
Natalie lowered the gun.
Then turned it toward the camera.
“Black Sun.”
The speaker crackled.
Kane's voice became uncertain.
“What?”
Natalie smiled.
“You gave me the command.”
She raised the weapon.
“And forgot to give me the target.”
She fired.
The speaker exploded.
Silence.
Then the emergency lights came back.
Briggs stared at her.
“How did you do that?”
Natalie picked up Lily.
“Because I remembered who I was.”
They ran.
The maintenance shaft led toward the surface.
Behind them, explosions shook the underground facility.
They climbed.
Lily held tightly around Natalie's neck.
At the top, a metal door opened.
They emerged behind a warehouse near the edge of Fort Campbell.
Night air hit Natalie's face.
Freedom.
Real freedom.
For approximately ten seconds.
Then headlights appeared.
Dozens of black vehicles surrounded them.
Soldiers poured out.
Natalie raised her pistol.
Holloway stepped forward.
“Don't shoot.”
A woman in a dark suit walked toward them.
She carried no weapon.
She stopped ten feet away.
“Natalie Carter.”
Natalie stared.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled.
“Director Sarah Vale.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Sarah.”
Vale looked at her.
“You failed.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.”
Vale turned to Natalie.
“The Board wants to speak with you.”
Natalie laughed.
“They can call.”
Vale looked at Lily.
“No.”
She said it softly.
“They can't.”
Natalie's smile disappeared.
Vale continued:
“Because your daughter isn't the reason we brought you here.”
Natalie tightened her grip on Lily.
“Then what is?”
Vale looked toward the sky.
A military helicopter appeared.
On its side was a symbol Natalie recognized.
The black stone.
The silver eagle.
Vale whispered:
“Your daughter is the reason they are afraid.”
Natalie's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Vale looked at Lily.
“Because she's the only Echo child born naturally.”
Silence.
Natalie looked at her daughter.
“What did you say?”
Vale smiled.
May you like
“She's not a subject.”
“She is the next generation.”
