Chapter 15 - THE GIRL WITH THE PINK RABBITNobody moved.

The little girl at the top of the stairs looked exactly like Emma.

Same eyes.

Same hair.

Same age.

Same frightened expression.

Emma stepped forward.

The other girl stepped forward too.

They stared at each other.

“Who are you?” Emma whispered.

The girl answered:

“Emma.”

Alejandro felt his blood turn cold.

Clara began crying.

“I tried to stop this.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“How many?”

“Two.”

“Two what?”

“Two babies.”

Clara explained the final secret.

Project Eve had created two genetic heirs.

One carried the access key.

The other carried the override.

Neither could control the Ledger alone.

Together, they could.

Alejandro looked at the two girls.

His father had not created one successor.

He had created two weapons.

Stefano smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Alejandro raised his gun.

“No.”

Stefano laughed.

“You still think you can win with a weapon.”

Alejandro slowly lowered the gun.

Stefano looked confused.

Alejandro smiled.

“You made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You believed I would choose power.”

Alejandro walked toward Emma.

Then toward the other child.

He dropped his gun on the floor.

“I choose them.”

His father stepped forward.

“You cannot destroy the Ledger.”

“No.”

Alejandro looked toward Daniel.

“But he can.”

Daniel held up the black key.

The old vault door beneath the house opened remotely.

Every screen in the estate flickered.

Files began uploading.

The Black Ledger was being transmitted.

Not to the Moretti family.

Not to the police.

To the public.

Thousands of hidden accounts.

Names.

Payments.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Every secret.

Victor stared at the screens.

“Who did this?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Emma smiled.

“She did.”

Alejandro stared.

“But Emma doesn't know how.”

Clara shook her head.

“She remembered.”

“What?”

“The red crayon.”

Alejandro remembered Emma's marked shoes.

Her drawings.

Her strange little symbols.

She had been leaving pieces of the encryption everywhere.

Nobody had understood.

Not even her.

Until now.

The system began collapsing.

His father's empire started disappearing in real time.

Phones rang throughout the mansion.

Politicians panicked.

Banks froze accounts.

Police sirens approached.

Stefano's men turned against him.

Valentina pointed her gun at Stefano.

“It's over.”

Stefano laughed.

“No.”

He reached into his coat.

Alejandro moved instantly.

A gunshot rang out.

Stefano fell.

Everyone froze.

Alejandro looked down.

The bullet had hit the floor.

Emma had pushed his arm.

“Daddy.”

Alejandro looked at his daughter.

She was shaking.

But she was standing.

The same little girl who had run upstairs with her last EpiPen had just saved his life again.

Stefano stared at her.

“You should have died.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

Then she raised her tiny hand.

She was holding something.

The lens.

The first hidden camera.

Alejandro stared.

“You kept it?”

Emma nodded.

“You said it was important.”

Alejandro remembered.

The camera had recorded the poisoning.

But it had also recorded something nobody had noticed.

The person who installed it.

The footage began playing on the main screen.

A figure entered the study months earlier.

Not Valentina.

Not Thomas.

Not Stefano.

Not Voss.

Someone else.

Alejandro stepped closer.

The person removed the camera cover.

Turned toward it.

And smiled.

The face became visible.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

It was Clara.

Alive.

Standing beside him.

The room exploded into silence.

Clara slowly closed her eyes.

Alejandro stared at her.

“You.”

Clara whispered:

“I had no choice.”

“You planted the camera.”

“Yes.”

“You poisoned the wine.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Clara opened her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Your mother.”

Alejandro froze.

“My mother is dead.”

Clara shook her head.

“She isn't.”

Everyone looked toward the hallway.

A woman stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Pale.

But unmistakably alive.

Alejandro's mother.

She looked at her son.

Then at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My children.”

Alejandro couldn't move.

She smiled.

“I came back for the only thing your father could never control.”

Alejandro swallowed.

“What?”

She looked at Emma.

“Choice.”

Behind her, police sirens screamed closer.

The empire was collapsing.

The Ledger was public.

His father was exposed.

Stefano was down.

Voss was gone.

And every secret the Moretti family had buried for decades was beginning to surface.

Alejandro walked toward his mother.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had to.”

“Why?”

She looked at the children.

“Because if your father knew they existed, he would have killed them.”

Alejandro looked at Emma.

The little girl still wore her pink rabbit backpack.

The same backpack that had carried the last EpiPen.

The same child who had saved the most feared man in New York.

Alejandro knelt.

“You saved my life twice.”

Emma shook her head.

“Three times.”

Alejandro smiled.

“What's the third?”

She pointed toward the window.

Outside, dozens of police cars surrounded the estate.

Then she whispered:

“You saved mine.”

Alejandro looked back at the collapsing mansion.

For the first time in his life, he understood something his father never had.

An empire built on fear could only survive as long as everyone was afraid.

But a family built on truth could survive anything.

The screen behind them flickered one final time.

One last file opened.

BLACK LEDGER: PHASE TWO

Alejandro's smile disappeared.

His mother's face went pale.

Valentina slowly turned toward the screen.

Victor whispered:

“Phase Two?”

The file contained only one sentence.

THE MORETTI FAMILY WAS NEVER THE FINAL TARGET.

Then another line appeared.

THE FINAL TARGET IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Alejandro stared.

Outside, police lights flooded the mansion.

Inside, the screen went black.

And somewhere beneath New York, a phone began to ring.

The war had never been about Alejandro Moretti.

May you like

It had only been waiting for him to survive.
