Chapter 15 - The Christmas Eve He Chose HerThe Empire, The Truth, And The Woman In The Snow"Clara."

She couldn't speak.
The voice came again.
"I know you're scared."
Her hand shook around the phone.
"You're dead."
A quiet laugh.
"That's what they wanted you to believe."
Adrien stepped into the room.
He had followed them.
His shirt was still stained with blood.
His eyes locked on Clara.
She whispered,
"My father."
Adrien's expression changed.
The voice on the phone continued.
"Adrien is there, isn't he?"
Clara looked at him.
"How do you know him?"
"Because I saved him once."
Adrien's jaw tightened.
"When?"
"When your uncle tried to kill him."
Adrien froze.
Thomas continued.
"Your mother knew the truth."
"Then why did you leave me?"
Silence.
When he answered, his voice broke.
"Because staying would have gotten you killed."
Clara closed her eyes.
All her childhood.
All the unanswered questions.
The photograph.
The promise.
The accident.
The business collapse.
Everything had been pieces of the same story.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because Gabriel is with me."
Adrien stepped forward.
"Put him on."
A pause.
Then Gabriel's voice came through.
"Adrien."
Adrien closed his eyes.
"Uncle."
"I am sorry."
Adrien's expression hardened.
"Twenty years."
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had no choice."
"Everyone always says that."
Thomas interrupted.
"Listen to me. Matteo is not the final enemy."
Clara stiffened.
"What?"
"The ledger was created to expose the people above him."
"Above him?"
"The men who built the Valente empire before your grandfather."
Adrien stared.
"Political power."
"Much worse."
Thomas continued.
"They don't want money."
"What do they want?"
"Control."
A pause.
"And they're coming for you tomorrow."
Adrien looked at Clara.
"It's Christmas morning."
Thomas laughed softly.
"For some people, it's Christmas."
"For others, it's judgment."
The call ended.
Adrien immediately called Luca.
"Seal the estate."
Luca nodded.
Then the phone rang again.
A video appeared.
Matteo.
Standing in the snow outside the Valente estate.
He held a detonator.
"Come outside."
Adrien looked toward the windows.
Matteo smiled.
"Bring the girl."
Clara's heart stopped.
"He's outside."
Adrien took her hand.
"No."
She looked at him.
"You're not going."
"I am."
"So am I."
He looked at her.
"You could die."
"So could you."
He stared at her for a long moment.
Then he said something she had never expected.
"I don't want to live in a world where you die for me."
She swallowed.
"Then don't make me watch you die for me."
He stepped closer.
Snow began falling again outside.
Christmas morning.
The mansion lights glowed through the windows.
Adrien touched her cheek.
"I spent my whole life believing love was a weakness."
Clara's breath caught.
"Adrien."
"I was wrong."
He kissed her.
Not gently.
Not carefully.
Like a man who had spent years starving himself of something he had never believed he deserved.
When he pulled away, his forehead rested against hers.
"Stay behind me."
She smiled through tears.
"Not a chance."
They walked outside together.
Matteo stood near the frozen fountain.
"Finally."
Adrien raised his weapon.
"It's over."
Matteo laughed.
"You think defeating me changes anything?"
He pressed the detonator.
Nothing happened.
He pressed it again.
Nothing.
Clara looked at Marco.
He smiled faintly.
"I took the batteries."
Matteo's face collapsed.
Security surrounded him.
Adrien stepped forward.
"You should have stopped when you had the chance."
Matteo looked at Clara.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"Your father didn't protect you."
He laughed.
"He used you."
Clara stared.
"Why?"
"Because you're the only person Elena trusted outside this family."
Matteo's eyes hardened.
"And now the empire belongs to you."
Silence.
Adrien turned toward Clara.
"The final clause."
She looked at him.
"What clause?"
Matteo laughed again.
"The one that says a person outside the bloodline chooses the next head of the family."
Adrien didn't move.
Clara looked at him.
The snow landed softly on his dark hair.
The most feared man in New York was suddenly waiting for her decision.
Not as a boss.
Not as a king.
As a man.
She stepped closer.
"I choose Adrien."
Matteo's laughter stopped.
"You don't understand what that means."
"I do."
She looked at Adrien.
"It means I trust him."
Adrien's eyes softened.
"And I choose her."
Marco smiled.
Luca lowered his weapon.
Matteo was taken away.
The estate fell quiet.
Hours later, Clara stood beneath the Christmas tree.
The silver angel had been repaired.
Adrien walked toward her.
"You realize something."
"What?"
"You saved my empire."
She shook her head.
"No."
She touched the angel.
"Your mother did."
Adrien smiled.
"And you."
He took her hand.
Outside, the snow covered every trace of the night's violence.
For the first time in decades, the Valente estate did not feel like a fortress.
It felt like a home.
Three weeks later, Clara's company was reopened under a new name.
Whitmore & Valente Events.
Her first client was the Valente Foundation.
Her second was a children's hospital.
Her third was a wedding.
Adrien walked into the ballroom during the rehearsal.
Clara looked up.
"You hate weddings."
"I hate most weddings."
"Then why are you here?"
He reached into his coat.
She expected a contract.
Instead, he pulled out a small velvet box.
Clara stared.
"Adrien."
He opened it.
Inside was a ring.
Not enormous.
Not flashy.
Just an old diamond that had belonged to Elena.
"My mother left one final instruction."
Clara's eyes filled.
"What did it say?"
Adrien smiled.
"Choose the woman who can make this house feel warm again."
He dropped to one knee.
Clara covered her mouth.
"Marry me."
She laughed through tears.
"You know you're still terrifying, right?"
"I've heard."
"And controlling."
"Sometimes."
"And impossible."
"Frequently."
She extended her hand.
"But you came into the snow for me."
His smile disappeared.
"I would walk through worse."
She slipped the ring onto her finger.
Outside, snow began falling again.
Not the violent storm that had trapped them on Christmas Eve.
Just soft flakes drifting through the morning light.
The silver angel turned slowly above the tree.
And for the first time since Elena Valente had placed it there decades earlier, the angel no longer guarded a secret.
It guarded a promise.
Because the woman everyone had expected to be the weakest person in the Valente estate had become the one person powerful enough to save it.
And the mafia boss who trusted nobody had finally trusted one woman with everything he had.
His name.
His empire.
His life.
His heart.
But six months later, on the morning of Clara and Adrien's wedding, a package arrived without a return address.
Inside was a photograph.
Thomas Whitmore.
Elena Valente.
Gabriel.
And a fourth person whose face had been scratched out.
On the back, a handwritten warning waited:
YOU CHOSE THE WRONG VALENTE.
Clara stared at the photograph.
Adrien walked into the room.
"What is it?"
She handed it to him.
His smile disappeared.
He looked at the damaged face.
Then at Clara.
Outside, wedding bells began to ring.
And somewhere across New York, a man who had been waiting twenty years finally made his move.
May you like
This time, there would be no one left to hide behind.
Not even Christmas.
