Chapter 10 - The Knife Behind the OathMy mother was rushed to a private hospital under armed guard.

The doctors stabilized her, but they warned me that her condition had worsened. The stress had accelerated her decline, and another crisis could prove fatal.

I stood beside her bed long after everyone else had left.

For twenty-five years, I had believed loyalty was the foundation of power.

Now I wondered how many people had sworn loyalty to my family while helping destroy it from within.

Luca entered the room just before dawn.

“We found the person who switched off the oxygen machine.”

I turned.

“Who?”

“Daniel.”

The kitchen worker had been caught trying to leave through the service entrance. He carried a burner phone, several thousand dollars in cash, and a key card belonging to the private security wing.

I went downstairs to question him.

Daniel was twenty-three, barely older than Clara had been when she first entered my mansion. He sat in a chair beneath a bright light, staring at his hands.

“Who hired you?” I asked.

He said nothing.

I placed the burner phone on the table.

“Your employer has abandoned you. Whatever you were promised, it wasn't worth this.”

Daniel swallowed.

“My sister is sick.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“Arthur Hale paid for her treatment. He said all I had to do was provide information and switch off a machine for thirty seconds.”

“You could have killed my mother.”

“He said she would be fine.”

“People like Arthur say whatever they need to say.”

Daniel finally looked up.

“He told me you would never pay attention to someone like me. He said you'd spend your life looking at the people who seemed important while everyone else did the work.”

The words were uncomfortably familiar.

I had spent decades walking through my own mansion without learning the names of the people who kept it running.

Daniel had been invisible to me.

That didn't excuse what he had done.

“Where is Arthur?”

“I don't know.”

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Daniel explained that Arthur had a contact inside the Hale organization. Someone who provided security schedules, medical arrangements, and information about Clara.

Someone who had known exactly when Eleanor would be alone.

I asked for the contact's name.

Daniel shook his head.

“He never gave me a name. I received messages through a secure account.”

Luca entered and placed a second phone on the table.

“We found the account.”

The contact was listed under a single initial.

L.

I stared at it.

Luca.

My best friend.

The man who had stood beside me through every battle, every betrayal, and every funeral.

I looked up slowly.

“What is this?”

Luca's expression changed.

“Bennett, listen to me.”

“Tell me it's a mistake.”

He remained silent for one second too long.

I stood.

“Tell me.”

Luca closed his eyes.

“I gave Arthur information.”

The room seemed to shrink around us.

“Why?”

“Because he threatened my daughter.”

His voice broke on the final word.

Arthur had found Luca's teenage daughter, Sophie, and threatened to reveal a secret about her biological mother unless Luca cooperated. At first, Luca had provided harmless information. Later, Arthur demanded schedules, records, and access to the mansion.

“Did you know he was planning to hurt Eleanor?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the photograph outside the house?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the nurse?”

“No.”

I wanted to believe him.

That was the worst part.

Luca had been my brother in every way that mattered.

“You should have come to me,” I said.

“And risk Sophie being killed?”

“You let him inside my home.”

“I thought I could control what he learned.”

I stepped closer.

“You cannot control a man who believes he owns everyone.”

Luca lowered his head.

“I'm sorry.”

I ordered my guards to escort him to a secure room while I decided what to do next.

As they led him away, he turned back.

“Bennett, there's something else.”

I waited.

“Arthur told me Clara wasn't the only child your father hid.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Luca's face was pale.

“He said your father had another heir.”

Before I could question him, my phone rang.

Clara.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was trembling.

“I came back to the mansion to collect my mother's things.”

“Clara, get out of there.”

“Bennett, there's a woman here.”

“Who?”

“She says she knew my mother.”

I heard a door close.

Then Clara whispered words that changed everything.

“She says she's my sister.”
