Chapter 1: The Attorney's Message

Emma's fingers stopped halfway to the car keys.

The screen of her phone glowed against the dim light spilling through the kitchen window.

From: Daniel Mercer, Attorney-at-Law

Emma, do not confront Ryan before speaking with me. We've uncovered something that changes everything. The house isn't the only asset at risk. Someone has been using your military identity for financial activity that could expose you to federal investigation. Call me immediately.

For the first time since she had awakened in a pool of blood and severed hair, her breathing became uneven.

Identity theft?

No.

Something worse.

Daniel Mercer wasn't the type of lawyer who exaggerated.

A former federal prosecutor, he chose every word with surgical precision.

If he said federal investigation, he meant it.

Emma closed the front door quietly behind her.

The morning air felt colder against her freshly shaved scalp.

She slid into her black SUV and locked every door before calling.

Daniel answered before the first ring finished.

"Where are you?"

"In my driveway."

"Good. Stay there."

His voice was lower than usual.

"What happened?"

"I spent most of the night reviewing documents you authorized me to access."

Emma gripped the steering wheel.

"And?"

"You remember the security clearance renewal you completed six months ago?"

"Of course."

"Someone submitted additional financial disclosures under your name three weeks later."

Emma frowned.

"I didn't."

"I know."

She felt something heavy settle inside her chest.

Daniel continued.

"The signatures are excellent copies."

"The digital certificates look legitimate."

"The tax records appear authentic."

"They even knew information that should have been classified."

Emma's military instincts immediately began connecting possibilities.

"Who had access?"

"I can't answer that yet."

"You can."

"I don't have proof."

Silence filled the car.

Finally he spoke again.

"But I do have one name."

Emma waited.

"Ryan."

She closed her eyes.

"Explain."

"Two years ago he persuaded you to sign a limited financial power of attorney."

Emma remembered.

He had claimed it was needed while she was deployed overseas.

A simple precaution.

Nothing unusual.

"I never imagined..."

"No one does."

Daniel sighed.

"He expanded it."

"Illegally."

"He used forged amendments."

Emma's heartbeat accelerated.

"How much?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I honestly don't know."

"Tell me."

"There are six shell companies."

"Three mortgages."

"Investment accounts."

"Business loans."

"And nearly everything lists you as the guarantor."

Emma stared through the windshield.

The sunrise suddenly seemed unreal.

"I've never opened any companies."

"I know."

"But according to the paperwork..."

"You own them."

A long silence followed.

Finally Emma asked the question she feared most.

"Am I under investigation?"

"Not yet."

"Yet?"

"The Army contacted the Treasury Department last week after noticing discrepancies during your promotion review."

Emma's stomach tightened.

"My promotion..."

"They approved it anyway because your service record is exceptional."

"But someone started asking questions."

Emma remembered the unusually detailed interview with the finance office.

At the time she assumed it was routine.

It hadn't been.

Daniel continued.

"I believe Ryan expected you to remain at your previous position."

"When you became Colonel, your finances received a much deeper review."

Emma slowly understood.

Ryan had never anticipated additional scrutiny.

His entire scheme had depended on nobody looking too closely.

Now everyone was looking.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You cannot tell him what you know."

"I wasn't planning to."

"I mean it."

"Emma..."

"If he's involved with whoever helped create these companies, confrontation could destroy evidence."

"What do you recommend?"

"For today?"

"Go to work."

"Act normally."

"Let him believe you still intend to resign."

Emma looked toward the house.

The bedroom curtains remained closed.

Ryan and Linda were still asleep.

Completely unaware.

Daniel added one final sentence.

"And Emma..."

"Yes?"

"I'm filing emergency motions this morning."

"By this afternoon..."

"...every major financial institution connected to those companies will receive fraud notifications."

Emma nodded slowly.

"Good."

She ended the call.

Instead of driving away immediately, she opened the secure notebook she always carried.

Combat habits never disappeared.

Every operation began with intelligence.

She wrote four names.

Ryan Carter.

Linda Carter.

Unknown accomplice.

Unknown beneficiary.

Then underneath them she wrote one sentence.

Objective: Discover who profits.

At 0730 hours, Emma arrived at Fort Belvoir.

The guard at the entrance snapped to attention.

"Good morning, Colonel."

The words still felt unfamiliar.

She returned the salute.

Inside headquarters, officers hurried through hallways carrying folders and encrypted tablets.

No one looked twice at her shaved head.

One captain simply smiled.

"New look, ma'am?"

Emma smiled back.

"Needed a fresh start."

He laughed and continued walking.

The Army cared about competence.

Not hairstyles.

As she entered the command suite, dozens of soldiers stood.

"Attention!"

The room echoed.

Her executive officer stepped forward.

"Welcome, Colonel Brooks."

"We're honored to have you."

Emma nodded.

"At ease."

For the next three hours she immersed herself in classified briefings.

Satellite intelligence.

Cyber threats.

Operational readiness.

International assessments.

For a little while, Ryan disappeared from her mind.

Work always had that effect.

Until her secure phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Colonel Brooks."

No response.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice.

"You should forgive your husband."

Emma remained silent.

"He made mistakes."

"So have you."

"Who is this?"

"You've started asking questions."

"You should stop."

The line disconnected.

Her training immediately activated.

She recorded the time.

Duration.

Voice characteristics.

Possible regional accent.

Male.

Approximately fifty years old.

Calm.

Confident.

Not emotional.

Someone accustomed to giving instructions.

Not making threats.

She forwarded the recording to military security.

Then continued her meeting as though nothing had happened.

But inside...

A new realization formed.

This was no longer a family dispute.

Someone outside her home knew exactly who she was.

Meanwhile...

Ryan finally woke around ten o'clock.

He reached for his wallet.

Gone.

Not physically.

Financially.

His phone buzzed repeatedly.

Credit Card Declined

Automatic Mortgage Payment Failed

Insurance Coverage Suspended

"What the hell?"

He hurried downstairs.

Linda sat at the kitchen table.

"My debit card doesn't work."

Ryan logged into online banking.

Access denied.

He refreshed.

Again.

Nothing.

"What happened?"

Linda looked toward Emma's empty parking space.

"She went to resign."

Ryan wasn't so sure anymore.

He opened his email.

Thirty-seven new messages.

The first came from the bank.

Your authorization privileges have been revoked.

Second.

Supplemental card canceled.

Third.

Automatic payment terminated.

Fourth.

Beneficiary removed.

Fifth.

Legal correspondence attached.

Ryan's face turned pale.

"What did she do?"

Linda still sounded unconcerned.

"She's bluffing."

Ryan opened the attachment.

The divorce petition.

Filed less than an hour earlier.

He reached the final page.

Then froze.

Attached beneath the petition...

Was a temporary financial restraining order.

Every asset under Emma's ownership had been legally protected.

Every account he depended on had vanished overnight.

Linda grabbed the papers.

"This can't be legal."

Ryan whispered,

"It is."

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?"

A voice replied.

"You've got bigger problems than divorce."

Click.

The call ended.

Ryan stared at the screen.

For the first time...

He realized someone else had entered the game.

And whoever it was...

May you like

Already knew exactly what he had done.
