Chapter 15 - The Woman Who Started It AllThe truth finally had a face

For several seconds, no one moved.

Klara looked older than the woman in the recording.

Her hair was completely gray.

Her face was thinner.

But her eyes were mine.

I knew instantly.

“Mom?”

She nodded.

I ran to her.

This time, there was no hesitation.

She held me.

“I've been waiting fourteen years.”

I cried into her shoulder.

“Why did you leave me?”

“Because I thought leaving you was the only way to keep you alive.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I missed you.”

“I know.”

She held me tighter.

Behind us, Elias raised his weapon.

Maxwell moved first.

He kicked the gun from his hand.

Victor reached for another.

Gideon shot it away.

The four of us faced Elias.

He smiled.

“You think this changes anything?”

Klara stepped forward.

“It changes everything.”

“You're too late.”

“No.”

She held up a small device.

“I copied the entire ledger.”

Elias's smile disappeared.

“It was never about the vault.”

“Then what?”

“The ledger was bait.”

Maxwell looked at her.

“For whom?”

“For everyone.”

Klara pressed the device.

Every phone in the terminal began ringing.

Hundreds of files uploaded simultaneously.

Police agencies.

Federal investigators.

News organizations.

Banks.

Judges.

Politicians.

Everyone.

Elias stared at the screens.

“What did you do?”

“I ended your empire.”

Sirens began outside.

Hundreds of them.

Elias lunged toward the exit.

Maxwell stopped him.

They fought.

The older man was faster than I expected.

He drove Maxwell into the wall.

Maxwell's legs buckled.

His old injuries returned.

Elias raised a knife.

I grabbed a steel bar.

I struck his wrist.

The knife fell.

Maxwell shoved him to the floor.

Gideon handcuffed him.

Sirens screamed louder.

Victor tried to run.

Elena blocked the door.

“It's over.”

Victor looked at her.

“You think they won't charge you?”

“No.”

She took off her watch.

“I'll confess.”

Gideon looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because I'm tired.”

Hours later, federal agents entered the terminal.

The documents were seized.

The accounts frozen.

The network dismantled.

People who had spent decades believing themselves untouchable were led away in handcuffs.

Elias Mercer was arrested under three identities.

Richard Rourke's real identity was finally confirmed.

A man who had been dead for fourteen years.

Maxwell sat in an interrogation room.

The wheelchair was gone.

He stood beside the table.

An agent stared at him.

“You've been walking?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Fourteen months.”

The agent stared.

Maxwell sighed.

“I was waiting for the right moment.”

The agent looked at me.

“And Martha Kovak?”

Maxwell looked at me.

“She saved my life.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He frowned.

“You saved mine first.”

Klara sat beside me.

Thomas Vale was taken to the hospital.

His condition was stable.

He would spend years answering questions about his role in the Rourke organization.

Gideon stayed with him.

Elena turned herself in.

And Maxwell?

He disappeared for three days.

On the fourth morning, I found him outside the hospital.

He stood beside a black car.

No wheelchair.

No guards.

No weapons.

Just Maxwell.

“Where are you going?”

“Nowhere.”

“You came to say goodbye.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I don't know who I am without the empire.”

I smiled sadly.

“You could start by being Maxwell.”

He looked down.

“That name belongs to a dead man.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It belongs to the man who earned it.”

He looked at me.

For the first time since I met him, there was no fear in his face.

No calculation.

No secret.

Just exhaustion.

And something gentler.

“I never asked you to stay.”

“I know.”

“I never expected you to trust me.”

“I don't.”

His eyebrow lifted.

I smiled.

“Not completely.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It is.”

He laughed quietly.

I had never heard him laugh like that.

Behind us, the hospital doors opened.

Klara stepped outside.

“Martha.”

I turned.

She pointed toward the parking lot.

A black sedan had been sitting across the street.

Too long.

Too still.

Maxwell noticed it.

His smile vanished.

“Get inside.”

The sedan's window lowered.

A man raised a phone.

Then held it toward us.

On the screen was a photograph.

Gideon.

Elena.

Thomas.

Klara.

Me.

And Maxwell.

Underneath the photograph were six words.

YOU DESTROYED THE WRONG FAMILY.

The car drove away.

Maxwell stared after it.

“Who was that?”

He didn't answer.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You killed the Rourke empire.”

Maxwell said nothing.

The voice continued.

“You forgot who built it.”

Maxwell's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“The first man who ever taught Richard Rourke how to disappear.”

The call ended.

Maxwell looked at me.

I already knew from his expression.

The story wasn't over.

May you like

It had only changed hands.

And somewhere beyond Providence, another man was opening a file with my name on it.
