Chapter 15 - Page SevenMark handed me the agreement.

I turned to page seven.
The first sentence made my blood freeze.
In the event of default, control of the family trust transfers to the designated successor.
The successor's name was not Rachel Whitman.
It was:
Eric Whitman.
I stared at my brother.
"What?"
Eric looked uncomfortable.
I did.
The agreement stated that if my father defaulted on certain obligations, Eric would receive control of the trust.
But there was a condition.
The trust could only be transferred if I was declared financially incompetent or legally disqualified.
I looked up.
"So the bankruptcy."
Eric nodded.
"You needed me to appear bankrupt."
"Exactly."
"And all the debt..."
"Had to be attached to me."
I felt sick.
Mark smiled.
"Now you understand."
"You created debt in my name."
"Yes."
"You forged documents."
"Yes."
"You manipulated the mortgage."
"Yes."
"You staged the bankruptcy."
"Yes."
I looked at Eric.
"And you planned to take the trust."
He stared at the floor.
I turned to Dad.
"You signed this."
He nodded.
"You signed away my future."
"I was trying to save the family."
"By sacrificing me."
His eyes filled with tears.
Mark interrupted.
"Enough sentiment."
He walked toward me.
"Sign the transfer."
I looked at the paper.
"Why should I?"
"Because your father dies if you don't."
I looked at Dad.
He shook his head.
"No."
Mark smiled.
"What?"
Dad suddenly shouted:
"Don't sign!"
Eric turned toward him.
"Dad!"
Dad looked at me.
"I've done enough."
Mark's expression changed.
Dad continued.
"Rachel, the trust was never meant to belong to Eric."
"Then why did you sign?"
"Because I was afraid."
He looked at Mark.
"Afraid of him."
Mark stepped closer.
"You owe me."
"No."
Dad shook his head.
"I owe Rachel."
The warehouse fell silent.
Then I noticed something.
A tiny red light near the ceiling.
A surveillance camera.
Daniel.
They were listening.
I needed to keep them talking.
"So what happens if I don't sign?"
Mark smiled.
"We make the bankruptcy real."
"You can't."
"We can."
"Not anymore."
He frowned.
I smiled.
"Because the court already has the evidence."
Eric looked at me.
"What evidence?"
"Everything."
His face changed.
"The messages."
"The forged signatures."
"The property transfers."
"The bank records."
"The photographs."
Mark's jaw tightened.
"You think you're protected."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"I know I'm protected."
Then I said the one thing they hadn't expected.
"The warehouse transfer failed."
Mark froze.
"What?"
"The bank rejected it."
Sophia had told me that thirty minutes earlier.
The transfer was pending.
Not completed.
Mark looked at Eric.
Eric looked terrified.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Mark's face hardened.
Daniel's voice echoed through the warehouse speakers.
"Nobody move."
Deputies flooded through the doors.
Eric dropped to his knees.
My mother started crying.
Mark reached inside his coat.
I stepped back.
Daniel shouted:
"Hands where I can see them!"
Mark slowly raised his hands.
For one second, I thought it was over.
Then he smiled.
"You still don't know the truth."
Daniel cuffed him.
I stared at him.
"What truth?"
May you like
Mark leaned closer as they led him away.
"Ask your mother who your real father is."
