Chapter 7 - THE DEAD LAWYERThe man in the photograph was Arthur Bell.

According to every official record I had ever seen, Arthur Bell died in 1997.

He had been my grandfather's attorney.

A family lawyer.

Nothing more.

Daniel disagreed.

“He wasn't your grandfather's lawyer.”

“Then what was he?”

“His partner.”

“In what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The original Rossi security network.”

I frowned.

“My family owned restaurants.”

“Your family owned information.”

That sentence opened a door I didn't want to enter.

Daniel explained that decades earlier, my grandfather had created a private network that monitored competitors, politicians, suppliers, and criminals who targeted the Rossi business.

It was supposed to protect the family.

Over time, it became something else.

A machine.

A profitable one.

Arthur Bell ran it.

Then my father inherited it.

My father wanted out.

Victor did not.

So Victor built his own version.

One that sold information instead of protecting people.

“And Arthur?”

“He disappeared.”

“Because he died?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Because he left.”

“Where?”

“No one knows.”

I stared at the photograph.

There was another detail.

Arthur's hand rested on my father's shoulder.

On his finger was a black ring.

A circle.

Three dots.

The symbol from the warehouse.

The symbol from Tessa's mother's photographs.

I stood.

“That ring.”

Daniel nodded.

“The network's mark.”

A phone buzzed.

Marcus checked it.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“You received a package.”

From whom?

He handed me a plain envelope.

Inside was a single key.

And a note.

COME TO THE OLD ROSSI THEATER.

ALONE.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That's exactly where you need to go.”

We arrived at the abandoned theater after midnight.

The building had been closed for twenty years.

Dust covered the seats.

The stage curtains hung in tatters.

I walked into the center aisle.

A projector suddenly flickered on.

On the screen appeared a recording.

My father.

Young.

Angry.

Alive.

“This recording is for Zo.”

I stopped breathing.

My father's voice continued.

“If you ever see this, Victor has probably convinced you that I betrayed the family.”

The recording paused.

Then resumed.

“I didn't.”

My throat tightened.

“My son, there are things about the Rossi name you were never meant to know.”

A second man appeared beside him.

Arthur Bell.

Alive.

Older.

Healthy.

Arthur looked directly into the camera.

“The trust was created because someone inside your family was selling children.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“Not children in the literal sense,” my father said. “Identities. Documents. Custody records. Anything that could turn a person into someone else.”

I stared at the screen.

Tessa's face had gone white.

The footage showed documents.

Birth certificates.

Adoption papers.

Financial records.

Then one page appeared.

NOAH COLE.

I stepped forward.

The next line read:

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: DANIEL COLE.

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: ELENA COLE.

Everything looked normal.

Then a second page appeared.

AUTHORIZED TRANSFER OF LEGAL IDENTITY.

Below it was Noah's name.

But the signature belonged to Victor.

Tessa gasped.

“No.”

I turned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked devastated.

“It means Victor tried to erase Noah.”

“Why?”

“Because Noah was a witness.”

“To what?”

The projector switched.

A hidden camera recording appeared.

A younger Victor stood in a room with Tessa's mother.

She was holding documents.

Victor said:

“You'll sign.”

She answered:

“No.”

“You don't have a choice.”

“I recorded everything.”

Victor stepped toward her.

Then the video cut.

My father's voice returned.

“Your mother was protected by the trust.”

The recording showed my father handing Elena an envelope.

“You will take the children and leave.”

Then a final file appeared.

DEATH OF ZO ROSSI SR.

I stared.

My father had been investigating Victor the night before he died.

He had written a note.

IF I DIE, TRUST NO ONE WITH THE LAST NAME HALE.

Then the screen went black.

A slow clap echoed from the balcony.

We looked up.

A man stepped into the light.

Older.

Gray hair.

Black ring.

Arthur Bell.

The supposedly dead lawyer.

He smiled.

“You've taken longer than I expected.”

I stepped forward.

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Tessa's mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me who killed my father.”

Arthur smiled.

“I can.”

He paused.

“But first, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

Arthur looked toward Tessa.

“Your father has been lying to you.”

Daniel went rigid.

Arthur continued.

“Because he wasn't protecting the boys from Victor.”

He pointed at me.

“He was protecting them from Zo Rossi.”

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Arthur smiled again.

“The man your father warned you about…”

May you like

He tapped the black ring on his finger.

“…was never Victor.”
