Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew The Secret

The woman standing in front of me looked like someone who had spent years learning how to disappear.

Her shoulders were slightly bent.

Her hands were shaking.

Her uniform was simple, the kind worn by employees who worked behind the scenes while wealthy people celebrated in rooms they were never invited to enter.

But her eyes told a different story.

She wasn’t just afraid.

She was carrying a secret.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The woman looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then toward Lily.

Then back at me.

“My name is Nora Bennett.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I’m Lily’s mother.”

I looked down at the little girl.

Lily immediately moved closer to Nora, grabbing her hand.

The way she held onto her mother told me everything.

This child trusted almost no one.

Except her.

“Why was your daughter hidden behind a curtain during my engagement party?” I asked.

Nora swallowed.

“I didn’t hide her.”

Her eyes filled with shame.

“She hid herself.”

The answer bothered me more than if she had admitted it.

“What do you mean?”

Nora looked at Lily.

“She heard Vanessa talking.”

My body became still.

“Talking about what?”

Nora hesitated.

The silence between us felt heavier than the stone walls surrounding the estate.

Then she said the words I never expected.

“About you.”

A wave of cold moved through me.

“Explain.”

Nora looked toward the ballroom again.

“She knows you are getting suspicious.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

The name sounded different now.

Not like the name of my fiancée.

Like the name of a threat.

Nora continued.

“She has been watching your health for months.”

My jaw tightened.

“Watching?”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

Nora took a breath.

“She told people she was helping you. She told everyone she was worried about your hearing problems.”

Her voice dropped.

“But she was waiting for them to get worse.”

I stared at her.

The words felt impossible.

Yet somehow, they fit too perfectly.

“Why would she do that?”

Nora looked down.

“Because of your company.”

Mercer Ridge Technologies.

Six billion dollars.

A company built from nothing.

A company that had become one of the most valuable technology firms in the country.

I had fought for it.

Protected it.

Nearly destroyed myself building it.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

Vanessa wasn’t interested in my heart.

She was interested in my empire.

But I needed proof.

Not suspicion.

Not fear.

Proof.

“I need you to tell me everything.”

Nora looked nervous.

“If she finds out I talked to you…”

“What happens?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

Lily tightened her grip around her mother’s hand.

That tiny movement angered me more than anything.

A grown woman had manipulated a child into silence.

A child who was only trying to protect someone she barely knew.

“How long have you worked here?” I asked.

“Almost two years.”

“Doing what?”

“I’m part of the household staff.”

“And you knew about this?”

Nora looked away.

“I suspected.”

“Suspected?”

“Yes.”

Her voice cracked.

“But I didn’t know how to stop it.”

The anger rising inside me was difficult to control.

“You watched her poison me?”

“No!”

The word came out louder than she intended.

Nora immediately lowered her voice.

“No. Mr. Mercer, I swear. I never wanted any harm to come to you.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

She looked at Lily.

Then she began.

“When you started getting sick, Vanessa changed.”

I listened carefully.

“She became obsessed with controlling everything. Your schedule. Your meals. Your medication.”

“Medication?”

Nora nodded.

“She told everyone she was helping organize your supplements because you were forgetting things.”

My stomach tightened.

“I wasn’t forgetting anything.”

“I know.”

The certainty in her voice caught my attention.

“How?”

Nora looked at me.

“Because Vanessa told me something.”

“What?”

“She said your memory problems would come next.”

The world seemed to stop.

My hearing problems.

The confusion.

The fatigue.

The moments where I struggled to focus.

She knew.

Not only did she know.

She predicted them.

“When did she say this?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“In the kitchen.”

Nora glanced around.

“I was cleaning when I heard her talking on the phone.”

“With who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“She said something like…”

She paused.

“She said, ‘The hearing loss is progressing exactly as expected. Once he becomes dependent enough, the transfer will be simple.’”

My hands curled into fists.

“The transfer.”

Nora nodded.

“I didn’t understand at first.”

Neither did I.

But now I did.

If something happened to me...

If I became mentally incapable...

If doctors declared me unable to manage my company...

Control could be transferred.

My shares.

My assets.

My entire life.

“Did she mention a date?”

Nora looked frightened.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

I felt a sudden pressure in my chest.

“Tonight?”

Nora nodded.

“She told someone the engagement party was the perfect moment.”

I looked back toward the ballroom.

Two hundred people.

All celebrating my future.

While someone inside was planning my downfall.

“Why tonight?” I asked.

Nora answered quietly.

“Because everyone important is here.”

That sentence hit harder than anything.

Vanessa hadn’t created this party because she loved me.

She created it because she needed witnesses.

Powerful witnesses.

People who would later say:

Ethan Mercer looked happy.

Ethan Mercer gave a speech.

Ethan Mercer celebrated his engagement.

She was building a story.

A story where I was a successful man whose health suddenly collapsed.

A story where she became the grieving fiancée who inherited everything.

I looked at Lily.

The little girl was still holding the broken rabbit.

“Why did Lily know?”

Nora’s expression changed.

“She saw something.”

“What?”

“A few nights ago.”

She looked at the mansion.

“Lily woke up because she heard voices.”

“Whose voices?”

“Vanessa and a man.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she see him?”

Nora nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who was he?”

Nora hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Your doctor.”

The words hit me harder than a punch.

“My doctor?”

“The specialist who examined your hearing.”

I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

Three doctors.

Three specialists.

And one of them had been inside Vanessa’s plan.

The pieces were connecting.

Too quickly.

Too perfectly.

Then suddenly...

A sound.

A vibration.

A phone ringing.

Nora looked down.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She grabbed her phone.

The screen lit up.

One message.

From Vanessa.

Nora’s face turned completely white.

“What does it say?” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She handed me the phone.

The message was short.

Only seven words.

“Bring Lily back. He knows too much.”

My heart dropped.

Vanessa knew.

She knew Lily had talked.

She knew I was no longer blind.

And now she was coming.

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

The woman I was supposed to marry was walking toward me.

Smiling.

Perfect.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

And for the first time in four months...

The ringing in my head disappeared completely.

Because my body was no longer trying to warn me.

May you like

It knew.

The danger was here.
