Chapter 11 - My Mother Was Waiting UpstairsThe woman I had mourned since childhood was alive, and she knew exactly why Mia had found me.

We ran upstairs.
A private medical suite had been hidden behind a false wall.
I had lived in the penthouse for three months.
I had never known it existed.
The door opened.
And there she was.
My mother.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray hair.
But her eyes were unchanged.
I stopped breathing.
“Mom?”
She smiled.
“Elena.”
I ran to her.
I didn't care about the machines.
The guards.
The danger.
I fell against her.
She held me.
For ten seconds, I was eight years old again.
Then I pulled away.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You had to?”
My voice cracked.
“You had to let me grow up thinking my mother abandoned me?”
She closed her eyes.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
She looked at Alessandro.
“His father.”
Then at Mia.
“Her.”
I frowned.
“You keep talking about her.”
“Because you still don't understand.”
She reached toward Mia.
Mia stared at her.
Then laughed.
My mother's face shattered.
“She's beautiful.”
“What is she?”
“An heir.”
“To what?”
“To a family that should never have survived.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Tell me about Sophia.”
My mother stiffened.
“She died.”
“You told Margaret she was alive.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because the moment they learned Sophia was dead, they would search for Mia.”
I stared.
“So Mia is Sophia?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
My mother took my hand.
“Your daughter.”
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“But the DNA said she wasn't mine.”
“Because the sample was contaminated.”
Alessandro looked at the lab report.
“By whom?”
“My sister.”
“Margaret?”
My mother nodded.
“She changed the test.”
I looked at Margaret.
She was standing in the doorway.
Silent.
My mother whispered:
“Margaret is not your aunt.”
I froze.
“She is the woman who betrayed me.”
Margaret closed the door.
No guards followed her.
“My sister,” my mother continued, “was obsessed with Vittorio.”
Margaret laughed softly.
“Obsessed?”
“You wanted his empire.”
“I deserved it.”
My mother shook her head.
“You wanted the child.”
Margaret's face changed.
“I wanted what he promised me.”
“What did he promise?”
Margaret stepped forward.
“The Duca family would belong to me if I delivered the heir.”
Alessandro raised his weapon.
“Who?”
Margaret smiled.
“You.”
He froze.
“You're the heir.”
She looked at me.
“And Mia is your daughter.”
Everything clicked.
Alessandro's face hardened.
“My father had another child.”
“Yes.”
“And he hid me?”
“You were the legal heir.”
Alessandro stepped backward.
“No.”
Margaret laughed.
“You thought you were the second son.”
“I am.”
“No.”
She held up a document.
His birth certificate.
Father:
Vittorio Duca.
Mother:
Marina Bellini.
Alessandro stared.
My mother whispered:
“You are my son.”
I looked at Alessandro.
He looked at me.
Brother.
Not stranger.
Not employer.
Not feared billionaire.
My half-brother.
Mia was his niece.
And the entire Duca empire had been built on a lie.
Then the penthouse alarms erupted.
A guard shouted from downstairs.
“Sir!”
Alessandro turned.
“What?”
“The board has arrived.”
“How many?”
“Everyone.”
Another alarm.
“There's more.”
“What?”
The guard's voice shook.
“Someone just entered through the private elevator.”
“Who?”
A pause.
Then:
“Vittorio Duca.”
I looked at my mother.
May you like
She whispered:
“He's not dead.”
